| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The friends and family of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant |

| 6 | 6 | | Jeffery Lee Hartley suffered an immeasurable loss with the death of |

| 7 | 7 | | this valiant soldier in Iraq on April 8, 2008, at the age of 25; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Hartley was assigned to the 1st Battalion, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Infantry Division, out of Fort Benning, Georgia; he was on his fifth |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | tour of duty in Iraq when he was killed by a bomb that exploded near |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | his vehicle in Kharguliah; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Jeff Hartley grew up in Hempstead, where he was a |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | member of the football team and the powerlifting team in high |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | school; soon after graduating in 2001, he entered the military, |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | where he became known for his dedication to duty, his sense of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | humor, and his concern for his fellow soldiers; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Exemplifying the highest ideals of the U.S. armed |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | forces, Jeffery Hartley inspired others with his courage, and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | although his passing has left a void in the lives of those who were |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | fortunate enough to know him, they will forever carry his memory |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | close to their hearts; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Staff Sergeant |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Jeffery Lee Hartley and extend sincere condolences to the members |

| 26 | 26 | | of his family: to his father and stepmother, David and Ann Hartley; |

| 27 | 27 | | to his brother, David Wayne Hartley; to his sisters, Lisa Ann |
