| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The family and friends of U.S. Army Staff Sergeant |

| 6 | 6 | | Fernando Santos of San Antonio suffered an immeasurable loss with |

| 7 | 7 | | the death of this valiant soldier on August 2, 2007, at the age of |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | 29; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Infantry |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division in Fort Lewis, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Washington, Staff Sergeant Santos was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, when |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Born on March 31, 1978, Fernando Santos was raised |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | by his grandparents in San Antonio; he attended school in the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Northside Independent School District and later earned his GED; he |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | enlisted in the army in 1997 and was serving his second deployment |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | in Iraq at the time of his death; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Staff Sergeant Santos looked out for his fellow |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | soldiers, giving them advice on a range of subjects; moreover, he |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | was known for his quirky sense of humor and his ability to make |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | others laugh; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan shared more than a decade with |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | his beloved wife, Adonia, whom he had known since childhood; he was |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | a devoted father to her son, and together the couple were blessed |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | with three more children; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Through his unwavering dedication to duty, honor, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | and this nation, Fernando Santos embodied the highest ideals of the |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | armed services, and memories of his love and friendship will |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | forever be cherished by all those who held him dear; now, therefore, |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | be it |

| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Staff Sergeant |

| 33 | 33 | | Fernando Santos and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his |

| 34 | 34 | | family: to his wife, Adonia Santos; to his children, Paul, Daniel, |

| 35 | 35 | | Iliana, and Victor; to his father, Gilbert Santos; to his brothers, |

| 36 | 36 | | Gilbert, Eric, Leroy, Anthony, Diego, and Joseph; to his sister, |

| 37 | 37 | | Genesis; to his uncle, Daniel Santos; and to his other relatives and |
