 R E S O L U T I O N
 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the tragic loss of
 U.S. Army Specialist Cory Joseph Bertrand of Center, who died in
 Afghanistan on October 14, 2008, at the age of 18; and
 WHEREAS, Born on November 15, 1989, in Louisiana, Cory
 Bertrand joined the military in January 2007 and was assigned to the
 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st
 Infantry Division, based at Fort Hood; he was killed when his
 vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device; and
 WHEREAS, Specialist Bertrand was a courageous and highly
 decorated soldier who received the Army Good Conduct Medal, the
 National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the
 Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the
 Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart, among others; and
 WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and
 women whose love for their country inspires them to volunteer for
 military service, yet the tragic death of this brave young man is a
 sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist Bertrand embodied
 the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who knew and
 loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now,
 therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist
 Cory Joseph Bertrand and extend deepest sympathy to the members of
 his family: to his mother and stepfather, Charlotte and Matt Allen;
 to his father, Ernie Nelams; to his brother, Austin Nelams; to his
 grandparents, Mable Bertrand, Rose Nelams, and Johnny and Lillian
 Allen; to his aunts, Melissa Bertrand and Kim Nelams; to his
 stepbrothers, Luc and Zane Allen; to his stepsisters, Whitnee and
 Sydnee Allen; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be
 it further
 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cory Joseph
 Bertrand.
