44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the tragic loss of
66 U.S. Army Specialist Cory Joseph Bertrand of Center, who died in
77 Afghanistan on October 14, 2008, at the age of 18; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on November 15, 1989, in Louisiana, Cory
99 Bertrand joined the military in January 2007 and was assigned to the
1010 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st
1111 Infantry Division, based at Fort Hood; he was killed when his
1212 vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device; and
1313 WHEREAS, Specialist Bertrand was a courageous and highly
1414 decorated soldier who received the Army Good Conduct Medal, the
1515 National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the
1616 Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the
1717 Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart, among others; and
1818 WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and
1919 women whose love for their country inspires them to volunteer for
2020 military service, yet the tragic death of this brave young man is a
2121 sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist Bertrand embodied
2222 the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who knew and
2323 loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now,
2424 therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2626 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist
2727 Cory Joseph Bertrand and extend deepest sympathy to the members of
2828 his family: to his mother and stepfather, Charlotte and Matt Allen;
2929 to his father, Ernie Nelams; to his brother, Austin Nelams; to his
3030 grandparents, Mable Bertrand, Rose Nelams, and Johnny and Lillian
3131 Allen; to his aunts, Melissa Bertrand and Kim Nelams; to his
3232 stepbrothers, Luc and Zane Allen; to his stepsisters, Whitnee and
3333 Sydnee Allen; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be
3434 it further
3535 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3636 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
3737 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cory Joseph
3838 Bertrand.
