5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the tragic loss of
6	6	U.S. Army Specialist Cory Joseph Bertrand of Center, who died in
7	7	Afghanistan on October 14, 2008, at the age of 18; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Born on November 15, 1989, in Louisiana, Cory
9	9	Bertrand joined the military in January 2007 and was assigned to the
10	10	1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st
11	11	Infantry Division, based at Fort Hood; he was killed when his
12	12	vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Specialist Bertrand was a courageous and highly
14	14	decorated soldier who received the Army Good Conduct Medal, the
15	15	National Defense Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the
16	16	Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon, the
17	17	Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart, among others; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and
19	19	women whose love for their country inspires them to volunteer for
20	20	military service, yet the tragic death of this brave young man is a
21	21	sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist Bertrand embodied
22	22	the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who knew and
23	23	loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now,
24	24	therefore, be it
25	25	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
26	26	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist
27	27	Cory Joseph Bertrand and extend deepest sympathy to the members of
28	28	his family: to his mother and stepfather, Charlotte and Matt Allen;
29	29	to his father, Ernie Nelams; to his brother, Austin Nelams; to his
30	30	grandparents, Mable Bertrand, Rose Nelams, and Johnny and Lillian
31	31	Allen; to his aunts, Melissa Bertrand and Kim Nelams; to his
32	32	stepbrothers, Luc and Zane Allen; to his stepsisters, Whitnee and
33	33	Sydnee Allen; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be
34	34	it further
35	35	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
36	36	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
37	37	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Cory Joseph
38	38	Bertrand.
