5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Words cannot adequately express the heartache felt |

6 | 6 | | at the loss of United States Army Sergeant Samuel E. Kelsey of |
---|
7 | 7 | | Troup, who died in Iraq on December 13, 2007, at the age of 24; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A combat engineer, Sergeant Kelsey was assigned to |
---|
9 | 9 | | the 3rd Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, |
---|
10 | 10 | | 3rd Infantry Division, and based at Fort Stewart, Georgia; he was |
---|
11 | 11 | | mortally wounded in Tunnis as he was trying to rescue another member |
---|
12 | 12 | | of his unit who had been felled by an explosion; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Sam Kelsey was born on June 28, 1983, and attended |
---|
14 | 14 | | elementary and junior high school in Winona before moving to Troup, |
---|
15 | 15 | | where he graduated from high school in 2001; his youth was filled |
---|
16 | 16 | | with such activities as Little League and fishing and was spent |
---|
17 | 17 | | among a wide circle of friends whom he considered family; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, This courageous Texan joined the army in March 2003; |
---|
19 | 19 | | he was stationed for a time at Fort Leonard Wood and saw duty in |
---|
20 | 20 | | Korea before being posted to Fort Stewart in March 2007; the |
---|
21 | 21 | | following October, he was deployed on his second tour in Iraq; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, From the time he was a boy, Sam Kelsey won the hearts |
---|
23 | 23 | | of all who knew him; his sunny, irrepressible nature as well as his |
---|
24 | 24 | | gift for friendship and his genuine concern for others have left his |
---|
25 | 25 | | loved ones with a rich legacy of cherished memories; as a soldier, |
---|
26 | 26 | | his pride in serving his country and his determination to protect |
---|
27 | 27 | | those under his command have also left a lasting impression; on |
---|
28 | 28 | | December 23, 2007, at the instigation of his commanding officer, |
---|
29 | 29 | | Patrol Base Kelsey was named in his honor; and |
---|
30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Charged with a difficult mission, Sergeant Kelsey |
---|
31 | 31 | | responded with unfaltering courage, and his service and sacrifice |
---|
32 | 32 | | are deserving of honor by every American; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Sergeant Samuel E. |
---|
35 | 35 | | Kelsey and extend sincere sympathy to his mother, Denina Kelsey, |
---|
36 | 36 | | and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |

37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

38 | 38 | | prepared for the members of his family and that when the Texas House |

39 | 39 | | of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Sergeant |
