5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of |
---|
6 | 6 | | Texas at Austin, the oldest research unit at the school, is |
---|
7 | 7 | | celebrating its centennial in 2009; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Established by The University of Texas Board of |
---|
9 | 9 | | Regents in 1909, the bureau is now part of the John A. and Katherine |
---|
10 | 10 | | G. Jackson School of Geosciences; members of the bureau staff |
---|
11 | 11 | | contribute to the state and to the advancement of science through |
---|
12 | 12 | | the undertaking of basic and applied research related to energy and |
---|
13 | 13 | | mineral resources, water resources, coastal processes, and |
---|
14 | 14 | | environmental issues; in addition, the staff provides a wide range |
---|
15 | 15 | | of advisory and technical services to industries, nonprofit |
---|
16 | 16 | | organizations, and local, state, and federal government agencies; |
---|
17 | 17 | | and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, the bureau has performed State |
---|
19 | 19 | | Geological Survey functions as requested by the Texas Legislature, |
---|
20 | 20 | | providing the geoscience information needed for the crafting of |
---|
21 | 21 | | state energy and other policies; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Bureau staff also conduct research for various |
---|
23 | 23 | | industry partners who lease mineral rights from the state, |
---|
24 | 24 | | including independent operators responsible for most of the oil and |
---|
25 | 25 | | gas production in Texas, and such initiatives create enhanced |
---|
26 | 26 | | royalty income and severance tax revenue; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Along with its service to elected officials, |
---|
28 | 28 | | government employees, and individuals in private industry, the |
---|
29 | 29 | | bureau provides outstanding educational opportunities for |
---|
30 | 30 | | undergraduate and graduate students, supports science fairs and |
---|
31 | 31 | | other programs oriented toward elementary and secondary students, |
---|
32 | 32 | | fosters the professional development of teachers, and promotes |
---|
33 | 33 | | professional education through its staff's engagement in symposia, |
---|
34 | 34 | | conferences, and the like; and |
---|
35 | 35 | | WHEREAS, A major research institution, the bureau maintains |
---|
36 | 36 | | the largest volume of subsurface core samples in the country, while |
---|
37 | 37 | | its publications program has produced hundreds of maps, reports, |
---|
38 | 38 | | and other publications; and |
---|
39 | 39 | | WHEREAS, Standing on the threshold of its second century, the |
---|
40 | 40 | | Bureau of Economic Geology is committed to addressing the issues of |
---|
41 | 41 | | energy, water, and the environment--three fundamental challenges |
---|
42 | 42 | | that are confronting Texas and the rest of the world; now, |
---|
43 | 43 | | therefore, be it |

44 | 44 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

45 | 45 | | Legislature hereby commemorate the 100th anniversary of the |
---|
46 | 46 | | founding of the Bureau of Economic Geology and extend to its staff |

47 | 47 | | sincere best wishes for continued success in all their endeavors; |
