44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas has long been a valued
66 supporter of the celebration of Juneteenth in Galveston; and
77 WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth
88 commemorates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the
99 first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June
1010 19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which effectively freed
1111 the 250,000 slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and
1212 WHEREAS, Mayor Thomas served her fellow citizens as a member
1313 of the city council before being elected mayor in 2002; she has
1414 provided exceptional leadership throughout her terms, and was
1515 nationally recognized for her efforts during Hurricanes Rita and
1616 Ike; and
1717 WHEREAS, In addition to participating in Galveston
1818 Juneteenth Celebrations for five consecutive years, Mayor Thomas
1919 supported the installation of the state Juneteenth monument and has
2020 assisted with the Al Edwards Juneteenth Banquet; and
2121 WHEREAS, Through her ongoing efforts and support, Mayor
2222 Thomas has helped to ensure a continued awareness of this landmark
2323 event, not only in Galveston but also across the state; now,
2424 therefore, be it
2525 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2626 Legislature hereby commend Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas for her notable
2727 support of Juneteenth activities and extend to her sincere best
2828 wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2929 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3030 prepared for Mayor Thomas as an expression of high regard by the
3131 Texas House of Representatives.
