| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Ben Raimer has long been a valued supporter of |

| 7 | 7 | | Juneteenth festivities in Galveston; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | celebrates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which freed the 250,000 |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Raimer is a board-certified pediatrician and the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | senior vice president for health policy and legislative affairs at |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston; a leading |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | member of his profession, he has also distinguished himself through |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | his engagement in a number of community organizations and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | activities; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Through the years, this public-spirited citizen has |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | given generously of his time and resources to benefit numerous |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Juneteenth events in Galveston; a sponsor and participant in the |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | annual Juneteenth Banquet for many years, Dr. Raimer has also made |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | possible the Galveston Ashton Villa Juneteenth Monument Lighting |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Project, and he hosted a meeting of the Texas Emancipation |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Juneteenth Cultural and Historical Commission at the Sealy Mansion |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | in Galveston several years ago; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, The support of this distinguished physician, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | administrator, and community leader of this important annual |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | observance has helped to keep the spirit of Juneteenth alive in the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | city of its origin; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commend Dr. Ben Raimer for his ongoing support |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | of Juneteenth activities in Galveston and extend to him sincere |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
