44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Dwayne Jones has long been a valued supporter of the
66 celebration of Juneteenth in Galveston; and
77 WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth
88 commemorates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the
99 first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June
1010 19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which effectively freed
1111 the 250,000 slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and
1212 WHEREAS, Dwayne Jones is the executive director of the
1313 Galveston Historical Foundation, one of the nation's largest local
1414 preservation organizations; in addition to supporting the
1515 installation of the state Juneteenth monument, he has assisted with
1616 the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Ashton Villa and other
1717 historic African American events on Galveston Island; and
1818 WHEREAS, Through his ongoing efforts, Mr. Jones has helped to
1919 ensure a continued awareness of this landmark event, not only in
2020 Galveston but also across the state; now, therefore, be it
2121 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2222 Legislature hereby commend Dwayne Jones for his notable support of
2323 Juneteenth activities and extend to him sincere best wishes for
2424 continued success and happiness; and, be it further
2525 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2626 prepared for Mr. Jones as an expression of high regard by the Texas
2727 House of Representatives.
