5	5	WHEREAS, Dwayne Jones has long been a valued supporter of the
6	6	celebration of Juneteenth in Galveston; and
7	7	WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth
8	8	commemorates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the
9	9	first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June
10	10	19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which effectively freed
11	11	the 250,000 slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Dwayne Jones is the executive director of the
13	13	Galveston Historical Foundation, one of the nation's largest local
14	14	preservation organizations; in addition to supporting the
15	15	installation of the state Juneteenth monument, he has assisted with
16	16	the annual Juneteenth Celebration at Ashton Villa and other
17	17	historic African American events on Galveston Island; and
18	18	WHEREAS, Through his ongoing efforts, Mr. Jones has helped to
19	19	ensure a continued awareness of this landmark event, not only in
20	20	Galveston but also across the state; now, therefore, be it
21	21	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
22	22	Legislature hereby commend Dwayne Jones for his notable support of
23	23	Juneteenth activities and extend to him sincere best wishes for
24	24	continued success and happiness; and, be it further
25	25	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
26	26	prepared for Mr. Jones as an expression of high regard by the Texas
27	27	House of Representatives.
