| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Roberto Juarez, Jr., Jeremy Griffin, and Paul J. |

| 6 | 6 | | Spillane of El Paso have successfully served as foster dog owners |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | and trainers as part of a pilot program between the Humane Society |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | of El Paso and El Paso Mental Health and Mental Retardation; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The men were each paired with a dog that had been at |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | the Humane Society for three or more months; guided by a |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | professional dog trainer, they learned how to handle and instruct |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | their newfound furry friends, which included an older dog, a puppy, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and a dog with severe separation anxiety; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Each day, the novice trainers worked to teach their |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | pupils basic obedience commands, as well as to break the dogs of bad |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | habits and generally prepare them for adoption; at the end of a |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | three-month period, in May 2009, all three dogs passed their canine |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | good citizenship tests; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, After this effective first run, the program is |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | expected to continue, with more teams of Humane Society pets and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | MHMR clients beginning their training soon; in addition, El Paso |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | MHMR plans to increase the volunteerism of its clients at the |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | shelter; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Pets are known for being especially beneficial for |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | those struggling with physical or mental health issues, and in the |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | case of animals that may have been abandoned, neglected, or abused, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | the presence of a kind human being is equally positive; now, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Roberto Juarez, Jr., Jeremy |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Griffin, and Paul J. Spillane on their outstanding work as foster |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | dog owners and trainers and extend to them sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | continued success; and, be it further |
