44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Ruth King of El Paso has played a vital role in her
66 community through her service with the YWCA; and
77 WHEREAS, Born and raised in El Paso, Mrs. King graduated from
88 Douglass High School and attended the Meharry School of Nursing in
99 Nashville, Tennessee; this accomplished woman went on to earn a
1010 bachelor's degree in sociology from Fisk University and a
1111 Rockefeller Fellowship to the University of Toronto; and
1212 WHEREAS, Mrs. King returned to El Paso and became the first
1313 African American nurse employed by the local school district; after
1414 more than a decade of service, she retired from nursing and began
1515 sharing her time as a volunteer with a number of worthwhile
1616 initiatives; and
1717 WHEREAS, A committed advocate for the YWCA, she figured
1818 prominently in the development of the Lower Valley branch and
1919 chaired the council during the facility's construction and
2020 remodeling; in that capacity, she helped to secure a day-care
2121 center, thrift shop, and swimming pool for the branch; and
2222 WHEREAS, Elected to the YWCA Board of Directors in 1980, Mrs.
2323 King worked on the first REACH selection committee, which honored
2424 distinguished El Paso businesswomen, and she also organized a
2525 program to involve high school girls in this annual event; her
2626 outstanding efforts in behalf of the organization led to her
2727 appointment to the nominating committee of the YWCA of the USA; and
2828 WHEREAS, Communities across the Lone Star State benefit
2929 greatly from the talent and commitment of individuals such as Ruth
3030 King, and for many years, this dedicated volunteer has served as an
3131 inspiring leader and role model in El Paso through her work with the
3232 YWCA; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3434 Legislature hereby commend Ruth King for her long record of service
3535 with the El Paso YWCA and extend to her sincere best wishes for
3636 continued happiness; and, be it further
3737 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3838 prepared for Mrs. King as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3939 House of Representatives.
