5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Ruth King of El Paso has played a vital role in her |

6 | 6 | | community through her service with the YWCA; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Born and raised in El Paso, Mrs. King graduated from |
---|
8 | 8 | | Douglass High School and attended the Meharry School of Nursing in |
---|
9 | 9 | | Nashville, Tennessee; this accomplished woman went on to earn a |
---|
10 | 10 | | bachelor's degree in sociology from Fisk University and a |
---|
11 | 11 | | Rockefeller Fellowship to the University of Toronto; and |
---|
12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. King returned to El Paso and became the first |
---|
13 | 13 | | African American nurse employed by the local school district; after |
---|
14 | 14 | | more than a decade of service, she retired from nursing and began |
---|
15 | 15 | | sharing her time as a volunteer with a number of worthwhile |
---|
16 | 16 | | initiatives; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, A committed advocate for the YWCA, she figured |
---|
18 | 18 | | prominently in the development of the Lower Valley branch and |
---|
19 | 19 | | chaired the council during the facility's construction and |
---|
20 | 20 | | remodeling; in that capacity, she helped to secure a day-care |
---|
21 | 21 | | center, thrift shop, and swimming pool for the branch; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Elected to the YWCA Board of Directors in 1980, Mrs. |
---|
23 | 23 | | King worked on the first REACH selection committee, which honored |
---|
24 | 24 | | distinguished El Paso businesswomen, and she also organized a |
---|
25 | 25 | | program to involve high school girls in this annual event; her |
---|
26 | 26 | | outstanding efforts in behalf of the organization led to her |
---|
27 | 27 | | appointment to the nominating committee of the YWCA of the USA; and |
---|
28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Communities across the Lone Star State benefit |
---|
29 | 29 | | greatly from the talent and commitment of individuals such as Ruth |
---|
30 | 30 | | King, and for many years, this dedicated volunteer has served as an |
---|
31 | 31 | | inspiring leader and role model in El Paso through her work with the |
---|
32 | 32 | | YWCA; now, therefore, be it |
---|
33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
34 | 34 | | Legislature hereby commend Ruth King for her long record of service |
---|
35 | 35 | | with the El Paso YWCA and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
---|
36 | 36 | | continued happiness; and, be it further |
---|
37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
