| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Maria Elena Cardenas served Val Verde County as |

| 6 | 6 | | county clerk for two decades, and her exceptional record of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | achievement indeed merits special recognition; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Del Rio to Tomas and Antonia Aguirre, the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | former Maria Aguirre graduated from San Felipe High School and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | attended business college in San Antonio; she married Jose Luis |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Cardenas in 1963, and the couple today have five children, Jose, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Bill, Oneida, Joelda, and Sobeida, as well as seven grandchildren; |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, A devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Cardenas dedicated |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | herself to raising her family for nearly a decade while her children |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | were young; she was hired as a Val Verde County deputy clerk in 1972 |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and held that job for five years before moving with her husband to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | San Antonio; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, When the family returned to Del Rio in 1979, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Mrs. Cardenas was rehired as a deputy clerk and later became chief |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | deputy; in 1986, she was urged by retiring county clerk Mildred |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | Hildreth to run for office and was elected unopposed in that year's |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | election; Mrs. Cardenas went on to serve three additional terms as |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | county clerk, doing an outstanding job of managing the official |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | records, administering elections, and fulfilling the other duties |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | of the office, until her retirement on December 31, 2006; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, A diligent and professional public servant, Maria |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Cardenas contributed greatly to the government operations of Val |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Verde County, and she may take justifiable pride in the excellent |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | service she provided to area Texans; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby honor Maria Elena Cardenas for her outstanding |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | work as the county clerk for Val Verde County and extend to her |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
