44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The life of an esteemed attorney and judge drew to a
66 close with the passing of the Honorable Scott Alan Ozmun of Austin
77 on May 8, 2009, at the age of 50; and
88 WHEREAS, Scott Ozmun established a distinguished career as a
99 civil trial lawyer that extended for more than two decades, and he
1010 took a leadership role in the Travis County Democratic Party as well
1111 as many professional organizations; in 2008, he was elected judge
1212 of the 353rd District Court, serving in that position until the time
1313 of his death; and
1414 WHEREAS, Born on September 30, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio,
1515 Judge Ozmun spent several years in New York early in his life; he
1616 completed his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University,
1717 where he served as student body president during his senior year,
1818 and graduated with honors from The University of Texas School of Law
1919 in 1985; and
2020 WHEREAS, After working as a briefing attorney for Justice
2121 William Kilgarlin of the Texas Supreme Court, he entered private
2222 practice and became a partner in the Austin law firm that is now
2323 known as Whitehurst, Harkness, Brees, Cheng & Imhoff; renowned for
2424 the skilled and compassionate service he provided to his clients,
2525 he was a respected member of the legal community and served on the
2626 boards of Volunteer Legal Services of Central Texas, the Legal Aid
2727 Society of Central Texas, and the Austin Young Lawyers Association;
2828 moreover, he was president-elect of the Austin chapter of the
2929 American Board of Trial Advocates and a member of the boards of
3030 directors for the Austin Bar Association and the Texas Trial
3131 Lawyers Association; and
3232 WHEREAS, Judge Ozmun's involvement in electoral politics
3333 included service as a precinct chair and as a member of the finance
3434 council for the Travis County Democratic Party, and he was the
3535 organization's party chair from 2000 to 2004; nonetheless, he had
3636 the ability to transcend partisan divisions and counted many
3737 Republicans among his friends; and
3838 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and
3939 support of his wife, Beth, and his daughters, Delaney and Kendall;
4040 through the years, he was an avid sports fan, cheering on the
4141 Buffalo Bills and the athletic teams of his alma maters, Georgetown
4242 and UT; and
4343 WHEREAS, Those Texans who give freely of their time and
4444 talents to benefit the greater community make the world a better
4545 place through their actions and their example, and Scott Ozmun
4646 leaves behind a legacy that will resonate for many years to come;
4747 now, therefore, be it
4848 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4949 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Scott Alan Ozmun and
5050 extend deepest condolences to the members of his family: to his
5151 wife, Beth Collum Ozmun; to his daughters, Delaney Elizabeth Ozmun
5252 and Kendall Lynne Ozmun; to his parents, Bob and Peggy Ozmun; to his
5353 brother, Randy Ozmun; and to his other relatives and friends; and,
5454 be it further
5555 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5656 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5757 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Judge
5858 Ozmun.
