5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Newt Hasson of Austin was deservedly inducted |

6 | 6 | | into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame on May 2, 2009; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Hasson is the first team doctor ever to become a |
---|
8 | 8 | | member of the hall of fame, and his induction pays fitting tribute |
---|
9 | 9 | | to his remarkable service in behalf of the Westlake High School |
---|
10 | 10 | | football team; and |
---|
11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, For 23 seasons, he has volunteered his time and |
---|
12 | 12 | | expertise to benefit Chaps players, missing only a few games since |
---|
13 | 13 | | he first began working with the team in 1985; he also helps to |
---|
14 | 14 | | organize other members of the local medical community to provide |
---|
15 | 15 | | sports physicals for aspiring Westlake athletes, and his efforts |
---|
16 | 16 | | have been emulated by volunteers at other schools across the state; |
---|
17 | 17 | | and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, An orthopedic surgeon in his professional life, Dr. |
---|
19 | 19 | | Hasson has long been involved in athletics, having played college |
---|
20 | 20 | | football himself at Duke University; he and his wife, Pam, have |
---|
21 | 21 | | lived in the Westlake area since 1983, when they decided to make |
---|
22 | 22 | | Texas their permanent home because of the state's legendary passion |
---|
23 | 23 | | for the gridiron; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Other members of the Hasson family have also |
---|
25 | 25 | | contributed to the Chaps football program; Pam Hasson and the |
---|
26 | 26 | | couple's three children are frequently in the stands, cheering on |
---|
27 | 27 | | the team, and son Duke Hasson stepped in as the starting quarterback |
---|
28 | 28 | | in 2000 and helped lead Westlake to the state title game; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Newt Hasson has provided quality medical care to |
---|
30 | 30 | | Westlake football players for nearly a quarter-century, and his |
---|
31 | 31 | | generosity and tireless support have made him an admirable and |
---|
32 | 32 | | influential figure in Texas high school sports; now, therefore, be |
---|
33 | 33 | | it |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Newt Hasson on his induction |
---|
36 | 36 | | into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame and extend to him |
