No. 2402 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Bill Beveridge of Galveston has been named an Unsung Hero by the Galveston County Daily News; and WHEREAS, Each year, the newspaper asks its readers to nominate people they know who have served the community quietly and selflessly; those selected as Unsung Heroes are honored in the special Profiles edition alongside the Citizen of the Year, and in 2009, the paper chose to recognize nine residents who helped others through the upheaval in the wake of Hurricane Ike; and WHEREAS, Bill Beveridge is a retired oil rig inspector, an antiques dealer, and a property manager for eight homes on Galveston Island; he brought neighbors together after the hurricane by setting up a gas grill outside the Victorian-style home of a friend on Sealy Street and cooking meals for a handful of beleaguered neighbors; and WHEREAS, Soon, Mr. Beveridge was cooking two or more meals a day, often for as many as 20 guests taking a much-needed break from the drudgery of cleaning and repairing their houses; local residents who had barely known each other shared their stories and pitched in to provide food and supplies, while friends of Mr. Beveridge drove in truckloads of bulk grocery store items and ice; and WHEREAS, The genial "head chef of Sealy Street" continued to provide his hospitality and culinary skill for some four weeks, until the power was generally restored to Galveston's East End; the friendships formed at the communal meals have since blossomed, and neighbors now happily gather to enjoy his cooking at birthday celebrations and other occasions; and WHEREAS, Bill Beveridge offered sustenance to his neighbors when it was most needed, and through his kindness and generosity toward others, he turned a time of turmoil into an opportunity to build a more close and caring community; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Bill Beveridge on being named an Unsung Hero by the Galveston County Daily News and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Beveridge as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
