5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Bill Beveridge of Galveston has been named an Unsung |
---|
6 | 6 | | Hero by the Galveston County Daily News; and |
---|
7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, Each year, the newspaper asks its readers to |
---|
8 | 8 | | nominate people they know who have served the community quietly and |
---|
9 | 9 | | selflessly; those selected as Unsung Heroes are honored in the |
---|
10 | 10 | | special Profiles edition alongside the Citizen of the Year, and in |
---|
11 | 11 | | 2009, the paper chose to recognize nine residents who helped others |
---|
12 | 12 | | through the upheaval in the wake of Hurricane Ike; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Bill Beveridge is a retired oil rig inspector, an |
---|
14 | 14 | | antiques dealer, and a property manager for eight homes on |
---|
15 | 15 | | Galveston Island; he brought neighbors together after the hurricane |
---|
16 | 16 | | by setting up a gas grill outside the Victorian-style home of a |
---|
17 | 17 | | friend on Sealy Street and cooking meals for a handful of |
---|
18 | 18 | | beleaguered neighbors; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Soon, Mr. Beveridge was cooking two or more meals a |
---|
20 | 20 | | day, often for as many as 20 guests taking a much-needed break from |
---|
21 | 21 | | the drudgery of cleaning and repairing their houses; local |
---|
22 | 22 | | residents who had barely known each other shared their stories and |
---|
23 | 23 | | pitched in to provide food and supplies, while friends of Mr. |
---|
24 | 24 | | Beveridge drove in truckloads of bulk grocery store items and ice; |
---|
25 | 25 | | and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, The genial "head chef of Sealy Street" continued to |
---|
27 | 27 | | provide his hospitality and culinary skill for some four weeks, |
---|
28 | 28 | | until the power was generally restored to Galveston's East End; the |
---|
29 | 29 | | friendships formed at the communal meals have since blossomed, and |
---|
30 | 30 | | neighbors now happily gather to enjoy his cooking at birthday |
---|
31 | 31 | | celebrations and other occasions; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Bill Beveridge offered sustenance to his neighbors |
---|
33 | 33 | | when it was most needed, and through his kindness and generosity |
---|
34 | 34 | | toward others, he turned a time of turmoil into an opportunity to |
---|
35 | 35 | | build a more close and caring community; now, therefore, be it |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
37 | 37 | | Legislature hereby congratulate Bill Beveridge on being named an |
---|
38 | 38 | | Unsung Hero by the Galveston County Daily News and extend to him |
---|
39 | 39 | | sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
---|
40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

41 | 41 | | prepared for Mr. Beveridge as an expression of high regard by the |
