H.R. No. 2479 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Voters overwhelmingly returned Arlington City Council member Robert Rivera to office on May 9, 2009; and WHEREAS, First elected to represent District 3 in 2005, Mr. Rivera has worked hard to improve the quality of life in Southeast Arlington, where he has been a resident for more than three decades; his current goals for the community include improving public safety, adding and updating parks, enhancing traffic flow and the condition of streets, and lowering the tax burden; and WHEREAS, Mr. Rivera has long distinguished himself as a civic leader; in 1990, at the age of 18, he became involved in Young Men for Arlington and the Home Run Arlington Steering Committee, and his public-spirited efforts have only intensified since then; he went on to serve as president of YMA in 1996, and he founded the YMA Annual Gala benefiting The Women's Shelter; while serving as a member of the Arlington Library Board of Directors, he co-chaired the library bond election, which resulted in funding to build the Southeast Library Branch; moreover, he served five years as board chair of the Arlington Convention and Visitors Bureau, and in 2001, he co-founded Touchdown Arlington to promote the city as the site of the new Dallas Cowboys stadium; and WHEREAS, Currently benefiting from the insight and dedication of Mr. Rivera are the boards of such organizations as Big Brothers Big Sisters, YMCA, and the H.O.P.E. Tutoring Center; he is the recipient of numerous honors, including the Outstanding Service to Children Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters, the 40 Under 40 Award from the Fort Worth Business Press, the Tom Vandergriff Leadership Award from Young Men for Arlington, and the Heritage Award from the United Hispanic Council of Tarrant County; and WHEREAS, A graduate of The University of Texas at Arlington, Mr. Rivera is vice president of a local commercial real estate company; and WHEREAS, Demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his fellow citizens, Robert Rivera is making a positive difference to the city of Arlington, and he has earned the respect and admiration of all who are fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature congratulate Robert Rivera on his reelection to the Arlington City Council and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Rivera as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
