5	5	WHEREAS, The second Susan G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Day
6	6	in Texas is being held on February 4, 2009; and
7	7	WHEREAS, Founded in 1982, the Susan G. Komen Affiliate
8	8	Network is the largest private funder of community-based breast
9	9	health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs
10	10	in the nation; the network is sustained by more than 100,000 breast
11	11	cancer survivors and activists; and
12	12	WHEREAS, In the United States, a woman receives a diagnosis
13	13	of breast cancer every three minutes, making that disease the most
14	14	frequently diagnosed of all cancers affecting women; it was
15	15	expected that, in 2008, approximately 185,000 new cases of breast
16	16	cancer would occur among women and that 41,000 women would succumb
17	17	to the disease; in addition, it was anticipated that more than 1,900
18	18	cases of breast cancer would be diagnosed among men; and
19	19	WHEREAS, Without a cure, one in eight women in the United
20	20	States will continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer; moreover,
21	21	the next quarter-century will see an estimated five million
22	22	American women and 25 million women worldwide diagnosed with breast
23	23	cancer, and more than a million American women and some 10 million
24	24	women worldwide could die; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure is doing outstanding
26	26	work in combating this devastating illness: up to 75 percent of the
27	27	net income of each Susan G. Komen domestic affiliate is dedicated to
28	28	fighting breast cancer in the local community, with grants being
29	29	awarded to local hospitals and community organizations that provide
30	30	breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment
31	31	for medically underserved women; the remaining net income, a
32	32	minimum of 25 percent, supports the Susan G. Komen Award and
33	33	Research Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer
34	34	research, meritorious awards, and educational and scientific
35	35	programs around the world; and
36	36	WHEREAS, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has played a critical
37	37	role in every major advance in the struggle against breast cancer,
38	38	contributing to such achievements as an increased rate of early
39	39	detection, more research, and a greatly improved five-year survival
40	40	rate; today, 2.3 million breast cancer survivors in the United
41	41	States attest to the power of social action and science to save
42	42	lives; and
43	43	WHEREAS, Over the next decade, Susan G. Komen for the Cure
44	44	aims to invest more than $600 million in breast health care and
45	45	treatment for the underserved, as well as over $400 million in
46	46	research; the organization also plans to mobilize more than 10
47	47	million individuals for the fight against the disease; and
48	48	WHEREAS, In support of the second Susan G. Komen for the Cure
49	49	Advocacy Day in Texas, members of Susan G. Komen affiliates in
50	50	Austin, Houston, Dallas, San Antonio, Amarillo, Lubbock, North
51	51	Texas, and Tarrant County are visiting the State Capitol; joining
52	52	them are medical professionals who have received Susan G. Komen
53	53	grants, as well as several representatives from the national
54	54	organization; and
55	55	WHEREAS, Breast cancer touches the lives of thousands of
56	56	individuals across the Lone Star State, and Susan G. Komen for the
57	57	Cure is to be commended for the vision, passion, and tenacity it
58	58	brings to its vital mission; now, therefore, be it
59	59	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
60	60	Legislature hereby recognize February 4, 2009, as the second Susan
61	61	G. Komen for the Cure Advocacy Day in Texas and extend to all those
62	62	associated with Susan G. Komen for the Cure sincere appreciation
63	63	for their commitment to such an important cause.
