| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Thomas F. Roberts of Valentine demonstrated an |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | exemplary commitment to public service as sheriff and tax |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | assessor-collector of Jeff Davis County; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Urged by local citizens to make a bid for the office |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | of sheriff, Tom Roberts won election in 2004 and served a notable |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | tenure from January 2005 through December 2008; he was also one of |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | 16 charter members of the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, This native Texan served in the U.S. Marine Corps |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and embarked on a career in law enforcement in 1972 in New Mexico, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | where he served as a deputy sheriff, police officer, and police |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | chief; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, In 1981, Mr. Roberts returned to the Lone Star State |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | to help care for his parents, and he returned to the law enforcement |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | profession 10 years later; he served as a police officer in a number |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | of Central Texas communities and held the office of chief of police |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | in Florence; he also served as chief deputy with the Mason County |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Sheriff's Office; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, In May 1998, Mr. Roberts accepted the position of |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | deputy sheriff in Valentine, in Jeff Davis County; his myriad |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | duties ranged from investigating criminal cases and traffic |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | accidents to herding errant cattle; in conjunction with the Texas |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Rangers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture, U.S. Immigration and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Customs Enforcement, and other police organizations, Mr. Roberts |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | and his colleagues seized several tons of marijuana and apprehended |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | a number of illegal aliens; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Roberts has enjoyed the |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | love and support of his wife, Mary, and their children, Barbara and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Richard; and |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | WHEREAS, Each day, public servants enhance the quality of |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | life for their fellow citizens in innumerable ways, and Tom Roberts |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | can indeed take pride in his notable efforts in behalf of his |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | community, his state, and his nation; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | Legislature hereby commend Thomas F. Roberts for his service to |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Jeff Davis County and to his fellow Texans and extend to him sincere |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
