44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Professor Diane Hays and architecture students from
66 The University of Texas at San Antonio have made a positive
77 difference in their community through their efforts at Raymond
88 Russell County Park; and
99 WHEREAS, Gaining real-world experience while improving this
1010 northside facility, the class worked with Bexar County and Jamail &
1111 Smith Construction to renovate a cabin, known as "The Schoolhouse,"
1212 and to create a nature trail; over a two-year period, students
1313 seeded the area with prairie grass, graveled a path, and
1414 constructed wooden observation decks, which Professor Hays hopes
1515 will be used as outdoor classrooms; and
1616 WHEREAS, This worthwhile initiative has taught more than 60
1717 students lessons in design and budgeting, in addition to providing
1818 them with hands-on building experience; as a result, these young
1919 Texans will enter the job market with excellent skills learned both
2020 in and outside the classroom; and
2121 WHEREAS, The students' work has not only enhanced the park's
2222 appearance, it has provided easier access for visitors, enabled
2323 better vantage points to view the area's natural beauty, and helped
2424 safeguard the park against soil erosion due to flooding; and
2525 WHEREAS, Diane Hays has developed an innovative and
2626 purposeful approach to training future Texas architects, and this
2727 noteworthy undertaking will be of lasting benefit to project
2828 participants as well as area residents; now, therefore, be it
2929 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3030 Legislature hereby commend Professor Diane Hays and her students
3131 from The University of Texas at San Antonio for their contributions
3232 to Raymond Russell County Park and extend to them sincere best
3333 wishes for the future; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3535 prepared for the class as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3636 House of Representatives.
