| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Professor Diane Hays and architecture students from |

| 6 | 6 | | The University of Texas at San Antonio have made a positive |

| 7 | 7 | | difference in their community through their efforts at Raymond |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | Russell County Park; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Gaining real-world experience while improving this |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | northside facility, the class worked with Bexar County and Jamail & |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Smith Construction to renovate a cabin, known as "The Schoolhouse," |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and to create a nature trail; over a two-year period, students |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | seeded the area with prairie grass, graveled a path, and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | constructed wooden observation decks, which Professor Hays hopes |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | will be used as outdoor classrooms; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, This worthwhile initiative has taught more than 60 |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | students lessons in design and budgeting, in addition to providing |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | them with hands-on building experience; as a result, these young |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Texans will enter the job market with excellent skills learned both |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | in and outside the classroom; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, The students' work has not only enhanced the park's |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | appearance, it has provided easier access for visitors, enabled |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | better vantage points to view the area's natural beauty, and helped |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | safeguard the park against soil erosion due to flooding; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Diane Hays has developed an innovative and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | purposeful approach to training future Texas architects, and this |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | noteworthy undertaking will be of lasting benefit to project |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | participants as well as area residents; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby commend Professor Diane Hays and her students |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | from The University of Texas at San Antonio for their contributions |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | to Raymond Russell County Park and extend to them sincere best |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | wishes for the future; and, be it further |
