| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the death of U.S. |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Army Specialist Jeffrey F. Nichols of Burnet County, who was killed |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | in the line of duty in Iraq on May 1, 2008, at the age of 21; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols died of wounds sustained when his |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad; |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to service, Jeffrey |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Nichols joined the army in September 2005 and received his basic and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols was assigned to Fort Polk in |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | December 2005, and he went on to distinguish himself as a field |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | artilleryman with the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry); and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, This brave and loyal soldier was decorated with the |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Iraq |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Campaign Medal; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | women whose love for their country inspires them to take up military |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | service, yet the tragic death of this dedicated young man is a |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist Nichols embodied |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who knew and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | therefore, be it |

| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist |

| 31 | 31 | | Kasey; to his son, Sonny; to his mother, Cathy Miears; to his |
