44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the death of U.S.
66 Army Specialist Jeffrey F. Nichols of Burnet County, who was killed
77 in the line of duty in Iraq on May 1, 2008, at the age of 21; and
88 WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols died of wounds sustained when his
99 vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Baghdad;
1010 and
1111 WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to service, Jeffrey
1212 Nichols joined the army in September 2005 and received his basic and
1313 advanced individual training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma; and
1414 WHEREAS, Specialist Nichols was assigned to Fort Polk in
1515 December 2005, and he went on to distinguish himself as a field
1616 artilleryman with the 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th
1717 Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry); and
1818 WHEREAS, This brave and loyal soldier was decorated with the
1919 Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Iraq
2020 Campaign Medal; and
2121 WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and
2222 women whose love for their country inspires them to take up military
2323 service, yet the tragic death of this dedicated young man is a
2424 sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist Nichols embodied
2525 the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who knew and
2626 loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts; now,
2727 therefore, be it
2828 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2929 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist
3030 Jeffrey F. Nichols and extend sincere condolences to his wife,
3131 Kasey; to his son, Sonny; to his mother, Cathy Miears; to his
3232 sisters, Elizabeth Garcia, Kara Nichols, and Rheadene Miears; to
3333 his father, Patrick Kearns; to his grandfather, Harold Dedmon; to
3434 his mother-in-law, Dorothy Casella; to his father-in-law, Dennis
3535 Griggs; to his uncles, Skip, Phil, and Gary Dedmon; to his nephew
3636 and niece, Andrew and Channing Garcia; and to his other loved ones;
3737 and, be it further
3838 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3939 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4040 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Specialist
4141 Jeffrey F. Nichols.
