5	5	WHEREAS, The family and friends of United States Army
6	6	Specialist Rodney L. McCandless sustained a devastating loss with
7	7	the death of this courageous soldier on April 7, 2007, at the age of
8	8	21; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Assigned to the 5th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment,
10	10	3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division in Fort Bragg,
11	11	North Carolina, Specialist McCandless was killed by an improvised
12	12	explosive device in Zaganiyah, Iraq; and
13	13	WHEREAS, Rodney McCandless joined the army in August 2005 and
14	14	subsequently completed advanced individual training and the basic
15	15	airborne course; he was a highly decorated soldier who received the
16	16	Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Achievement Medal
17	17	with one oak leaf cluster, the National Defense Service Medal, the
18	18	Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal,
19	19	the Army Service Ribbon, the Combat Action Badge, and the
20	20	Parachutist Badge; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and
22	22	women whose love for their country inspires them to volunteer for
23	23	military service, yet the tragic death of this brave young man is a
24	24	sobering reminder of the cost of war; Specialist McCandless
25	25	embodied the highest ideals of the U.S. armed forces, and those who
26	26	knew and loved him will forever carry him close in their hearts;
27	27	now, therefore, be it
28	28	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
29	29	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of U.S. Army Specialist
30	30	Rodney L. McCandless and extend deepest sympathy to the members of
31	31	his family: to his father, Virgil L. McCandless; to his mother,
32	32	Rhonda L. Cones; to his sister, Chassity McCandless; and to his
33	33	other relatives and many friends; and, be it further
34	34	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
35	35	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
36	36	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of U.S. Army
37	37	Specialist Rodney McCandless.
