5	5	WHEREAS, Members of the Coast Guard helicopter crew of CGNR
6	6	6512 have been awarded the prestigious Air Medal commendation in
7	7	recognition of their heroic actions in rescuing victims of
8	8	Hurricane Ike on September 12 and September 13, 2008; and
9	9	WHEREAS, This courageous and skilled crew included
10	10	Lieutenant John T. Moran, who served as the aircraft commander,
11	11	Lieutenant Junior Grade Dakata B. Brodie, the co-pilot, Aviation
12	12	Electronics Technician Second Class James M. Russell, the flight
13	13	mechanic, and Petty Officer Third Class Shane Moore, the rescue
14	14	swimmer; and
15	15	WHEREAS, On September 12, with Ike closing in on the Texas
16	16	coast and winds gusting between 30 and 40 knots, CGNR 6512 was
17	17	dispatched to the Bolivar Peninsula; there, the crew hoisted seven
18	18	people to safety from the bed of a submerged pickup truck, working
19	19	quickly to complete the work before their aircraft ran out of fuel;
20	20	and
21	21	WHEREAS, Later that day, the helicopter maneuvered into a
22	22	precarious position between trees, power lines, and towers to hoist
23	23	an injured woman to safety and then completed a confined-area
24	24	landing nearby to pick up five more people; after transporting
25	25	those individuals to a secure location, CGNR 6512 proceeded once
26	26	more to the Bolivar Peninsula to rescue seven additional victims
27	27	stranded by the rising waters; and
28	28	WHEREAS, These courageous rescuers returned to action the
29	29	next day, after the hurricane had made landfall; they used their
30	30	hoist equipment to remove three people stranded on the deck of a
31	31	house and then completed the medical evacuation of an elderly woman
32	32	by once again setting down in a tight landing zone; in total, CGNR
33	33	6512 rescued 24 people over the course of two days while grappling
34	34	with extremely perilous conditions; and
35	35	WHEREAS, Valiantly flying into harm's way to help those in
36	36	need and performing their duties as a perfectly coordinated team,
37	37	the crew members of CGNR 6512 embodied the highest ideals of the
38	38	United States Coast Guard, and they are indeed deserving of this
39	39	illustrious military commendation; now, therefore, be it
40	40	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
41	41	Legislature hereby congratulate the crew of CGNR 6512 on its
42	42	receipt of the Air Medal and commend Lieutenant Moran, Lieutenant
43	43	Brodie, Technician Russell, and Petty Officer Moore for their
44	44	exceptional heroism during Hurricane Ike; and, be it further
45	45	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
46	46	prepared for the crew as an expression of high regard by the Texas
47	47	House of Representatives.
