44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Words cannot begin to express the heartache caused
66 by the loss of U.S. Army Corporal Jose A. Rubio Hernandez of
77 Mission, who died in Iraq on March 24, 2008, at the age of 24; and
88 WHEREAS, Assigned to the 4th Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment,
99 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, and based at Fort
1010 Stewart, Georgia, Corporal Rubio deployed to Iraq in October 2007;
1111 he was mortally wounded when his vehicle was hit by a makeshift bomb
1212 in Baghdad; and
1313 WHEREAS, This outstanding young Texan was born on March 19,
1414 1984, in Reynosa, Mexico, the youngest of nine brothers and
1515 sisters; he moved to the United States with his family when he was
1616 four and grew up in Mission, where he graduated from a charter high
1717 school; deeply grateful for the opportunity his family had found in
1818 the U.S., he wanted to enlist in the army as a way of giving
1919 something back; and
2020 WHEREAS, To improve his chances for advancement in the
2121 military, which he joined in early 2006, Joe Rubio first earned an
2222 associate's degree in 2005 at South Texas College, where he pursued
2323 his passion for computer technology; he hoped to become a computer
2424 programmer after completing his service in the army and had his
2525 sights set on one day earning a doctorate; and
2626 WHEREAS, Joe Rubio married Jennifer Guerra, his high school
2727 sweetheart, in May 2006, after completing basic training, and their
2828 son, Nikolai Cyrus, was born just a few months before Corporal Rubio
2929 deployed overseas; and
3030 WHEREAS, In appreciation for Joe Rubio's courageous efforts
3131 in behalf of his adopted country, the City of Mission has renamed
3232 the street on which he grew up as Corporal Jose A. Rubio Street; Joe
3333 Rubio has also been posthumously granted American citizenship,
3434 something he had hoped to attain and for which he had already
3535 completed his application; and
3636 WHEREAS, Talented and hardworking, Corporal Jose Rubio
3737 aspired to make his mark in the world: "he wanted," his wife said,
3838 "to be known for something"; with his passing, this nation has lost
3939 an exemplary patriot and a man who had much yet to accomplish, and
4040 his service and sacrifice are deserving of honor by every American;
4141 now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Corporal Jose A. Rubio
4444 Hernandez and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
4545 to his wife, Jennifer; to his son, Nikolai Cyrus; to his mother,
4646 Macaria; to his brothers and sisters; and to his other relatives and
4747 friends; and, be it further
4848 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4949 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5050 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Corporal
5151 Jose A. Rubio Hernandez.
