| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Virginia Boyd Connally received the first Legacy |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Award from the Abilene Woman's Club on April 23, 2009, in honor of |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | her many achievements; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A 1933 graduate of Hardin-Simmons University in |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Abilene, the former Virginia Boyd went on to earn a medical degree |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | from Louisiana State University; she completed an internship at |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | Charity Hospital in New Orleans and subsequently returned to |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Abilene, where she opened a practice in 1940; not only was she the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | city's first female physician, but she also later became the first |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | female chief of staff at St. Ann's Hospital and at Hendrick Medical |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | Center, and she served as the first female president of the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Taylor-Jones Medical Society; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, She was known both for her exceptional skill as a |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | doctor and for her commitment to the community; she has long |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | supported her alma mater, HSU, and she has been an active member of |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | First Baptist Church since her undergraduate days; moreover, she |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | has been a member of the Woman's Club for more than half a century; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, In 1953, she married Ed Connally, a local oilman who |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | also served as chair of the state Democratic Party, and the couple |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | became friends with such political luminaries as then senator |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Lyndon Baines Johnson and Lady Bird Johnson; the Legacy Award |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | ceremony included tributes to her by Lynda Johnson Robb, Luci |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Baines Johnson, Liz Carpenter, and New Mexico governor Bill |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Richardson; and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | an individual's life, some people leave their unmistakable mark on |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the world as they move through it, and Virginia Boyd Connally is |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | indeed one such person; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby honor Dr. Virginia Boyd Connally on her receipt |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | of the first Legacy Award from the Abilene Woman's Club and extend |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |

| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 39 | 39 | | prepared for Dr. Connally as an expression of high regard by the |
