5	5	WHEREAS, Governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr., is being honored with
6	6	the 2009 Pathfinder Award by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of
7	7	Commerce, in recognition of his extraordinary record of
8	8	philanthropy and community service in the Alamo City; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Born in Uvalde in 1923, Dolph Briscoe has achieved a
10	10	distinguished career in both the public and private arenas; this
11	11	esteemed Texan served as a member of the Texas Legislature from 1949
12	12	to 1957 and as governor of Texas from 1973 to 1979; he and his wife,
13	13	Janey Slaughter Briscoe, an eminent civic leader in her own right,
14	14	shared a devoted union of nearly 58 years, until her passing in
15	15	2000; and
16	16	WHEREAS, One of the greatest beneficiaries of Governor
17	17	Briscoe's generosity has been The University of Texas Health
18	18	Science Center at San Antonio, which from its beginning has enjoyed
19	19	his and his family's staunch support; during the past decade,
20	20	Governor Briscoe has donated more than $4 million to the health
21	21	science center to establish the world-class Janey Briscoe Center of
22	22	Excellence in Cardiovascular Research and the Janey Briscoe
23	23	Distinguished University Chair in Cardiovascular Research; and
24	24	WHEREAS, The health science center honored Governor Briscoe
25	25	in 2008 with the creation of the Briscoe Family Legacy Fund in
26	26	Women's Health in the School of Medicine; at the gala honoring
27	27	Governor Briscoe and celebrating the establishment of the fund,
28	28	Governor Briscoe announced that he and his family were giving the
29	29	center $5 million in support of cardiology and women's health; the
30	30	university has expressed its appreciation by naming the Division of
31	31	Cardiology in the medical school after Janey and Dolph Briscoe; and
32	32	WHEREAS, Among Governor Briscoe's other contributions to the
33	33	center have been the establishment of the Janey Briscoe Endowed
34	34	Scholarship in Nursing and the raising of $12 million in just seven
35	35	months to help create the South Texas Centers for Biology in
36	36	Medicine, for which ground breaking was held in 1998; the library on
37	37	the UTHSC campus bears Governor Briscoe's name, in gratitude for
38	38	his outstanding generosity, and the Children's Center of University
39	39	Hospital is named for Janey Briscoe, in appreciation of her
40	40	lifetime of service to children; and
41	41	WHEREAS, Governor Briscoe has also taken a keen interest in
42	42	The University of Texas at San Antonio, where his long record of
43	43	support includes service as a member of the UTSA development board
44	44	and President's Associates, the co-chairing, with his wife, of the
45	45	school's Engineering and Biotech Initiative, and the establishment
46	46	of the Janey S. Briscoe Endowed Chair in the Business of Health; and
47	47	WHEREAS, Cultural institutions have enjoyed Governor
48	48	Briscoe's generous patronage as well; his gift of $4 million has
49	49	laid the foundation for the Dolph and Janey Briscoe Western Art
50	50	Museum, which is being built in the heart of downtown San Antonio,
51	51	while at the Witte Museum, his donation of $500,000 helped to mount
52	52	a stunning exhibition about South Texas; he has also helped lead the
53	53	campaign to create the South Texas Heritage Center on the Witte
54	54	campus; and
55	55	WHEREAS, Over the years, Governor Briscoe's deep interest in
56	56	the welfare of San Antonio citizens has been manifested through his
57	57	involvement with such institutions as the Southwest Mental Health
58	58	Center, United Way, San Antonio Advocacy Council, and Greater San
59	59	Antonio Chamber of Commerce; and
60	60	WHEREAS, In addition to his most recent accolade, Governor
61	61	Briscoe has been recognized in San Antonio with the Frost Award from
62	62	UTSA and the naming of a middle school in his honor; and
63	63	WHEREAS, Governor Briscoe's three children, Janey Briscoe
64	64	Marmion, Dolph Briscoe III, and Cele Briscoe Carpenter, have
65	65	supported their father in his charitable endeavors; and
66	66	WHEREAS, Through his far-reaching generosity, Governor Dolph
67	67	Briscoe, Jr., has advanced the development of medical, educational,
68	68	and cultural institutions in San Antonio and helped to secure a
69	69	brighter, more promising future for countless Texans; now,
70	70	therefore, be it
71	71	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
72	72	Legislature hereby congratulate Governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr., on his
73	73	receipt of the 2009 Pathfinder Award from the Greater San Antonio
74	74	Chamber of Commerce and extend to him profound appreciation for a
75	75	lifetime of illustrious service in behalf of the Lone Star State;
76	76	and, be it further
77	77	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
78	78	prepared for Governor Briscoe as an expression of high regard by the
79	79	Texas House of Representatives.
