44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr., is being honored with
66 the 2009 Pathfinder Award by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of
77 Commerce, in recognition of his extraordinary record of
88 philanthropy and community service in the Alamo City; and
99 WHEREAS, Born in Uvalde in 1923, Dolph Briscoe has achieved a
1010 distinguished career in both the public and private arenas; this
1111 esteemed Texan served as a member of the Texas Legislature from 1949
1212 to 1957 and as governor of Texas from 1973 to 1979; he and his wife,
1313 Janey Slaughter Briscoe, an eminent civic leader in her own right,
1414 shared a devoted union of nearly 58 years, until her passing in
1515 2000; and
1616 WHEREAS, One of the greatest beneficiaries of Governor
1717 Briscoe's generosity has been The University of Texas Health
1818 Science Center at San Antonio, which from its beginning has enjoyed
1919 his and his family's staunch support; during the past decade,
2020 Governor Briscoe has donated more than $4 million to the health
2121 science center to establish the world-class Janey Briscoe Center of
2222 Excellence in Cardiovascular Research and the Janey Briscoe
2323 Distinguished University Chair in Cardiovascular Research; and
2424 WHEREAS, The health science center honored Governor Briscoe
2525 in 2008 with the creation of the Briscoe Family Legacy Fund in
2626 Women's Health in the School of Medicine; at the gala honoring
2727 Governor Briscoe and celebrating the establishment of the fund,
2828 Governor Briscoe announced that he and his family were giving the
2929 center $5 million in support of cardiology and women's health; the
3030 university has expressed its appreciation by naming the Division of
3131 Cardiology in the medical school after Janey and Dolph Briscoe; and
3232 WHEREAS, Among Governor Briscoe's other contributions to the
3333 center have been the establishment of the Janey Briscoe Endowed
3434 Scholarship in Nursing and the raising of $12 million in just seven
3535 months to help create the South Texas Centers for Biology in
3636 Medicine, for which ground breaking was held in 1998; the library on
3737 the UTHSC campus bears Governor Briscoe's name, in gratitude for
3838 his outstanding generosity, and the Children's Center of University
3939 Hospital is named for Janey Briscoe, in appreciation of her
4040 lifetime of service to children; and
4141 WHEREAS, Governor Briscoe has also taken a keen interest in
4242 The University of Texas at San Antonio, where his long record of
4343 support includes service as a member of the UTSA development board
4444 and President's Associates, the co-chairing, with his wife, of the
4545 school's Engineering and Biotech Initiative, and the establishment
4646 of the Janey S. Briscoe Endowed Chair in the Business of Health; and
4747 WHEREAS, Cultural institutions have enjoyed Governor
4848 Briscoe's generous patronage as well; his gift of $4 million has
4949 laid the foundation for the Dolph and Janey Briscoe Western Art
5050 Museum, which is being built in the heart of downtown San Antonio,
5151 while at the Witte Museum, his donation of $500,000 helped to mount
5252 a stunning exhibition about South Texas; he has also helped lead the
5353 campaign to create the South Texas Heritage Center on the Witte
5454 campus; and
5555 WHEREAS, Over the years, Governor Briscoe's deep interest in
5656 the welfare of San Antonio citizens has been manifested through his
5757 involvement with such institutions as the Southwest Mental Health
5858 Center, United Way, San Antonio Advocacy Council, and Greater San
5959 Antonio Chamber of Commerce; and
6060 WHEREAS, In addition to his most recent accolade, Governor
6161 Briscoe has been recognized in San Antonio with the Frost Award from
6262 UTSA and the naming of a middle school in his honor; and
6363 WHEREAS, Governor Briscoe's three children, Janey Briscoe
6464 Marmion, Dolph Briscoe III, and Cele Briscoe Carpenter, have
6565 supported their father in his charitable endeavors; and
6666 WHEREAS, Through his far-reaching generosity, Governor Dolph
6767 Briscoe, Jr., has advanced the development of medical, educational,
6868 and cultural institutions in San Antonio and helped to secure a
6969 brighter, more promising future for countless Texans; now,
7070 therefore, be it
7171 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
7272 Legislature hereby congratulate Governor Dolph Briscoe, Jr., on his
7373 receipt of the 2009 Pathfinder Award from the Greater San Antonio
7474 Chamber of Commerce and extend to him profound appreciation for a
7575 lifetime of illustrious service in behalf of the Lone Star State;
7676 and, be it further
7777 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
7878 prepared for Governor Briscoe as an expression of high regard by the
7979 Texas House of Representatives.
