44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Residents of Rio Grande City fondly remember Pete
66 Diaz, Jr., a cherished friend and a dedicated civic leader, who died
77 on March 17, 1999, at the age of 71; and
88 WHEREAS, The son of Pedro Diaz, Sr., and Aurora Valverde
99 Diaz, Pete Diaz was born on November 17, 1927, in Rio Grande City;
1010 he went on to become an entrepreneur and the proprietor of the
1111 Valley Mart grocery store chain, as well as a management company, a
1212 Spanish language radio station, a motor inn, a golf course, and 14
1313 shopping centers, and his company, Diaz Enterprises, was one of the
1414 largest Hispanic-owned businesses in the country; moreover, he
1515 believed in helping others to succeed, and he frequently provided
1616 assistance to his fellow citizens to help them achieve their
1717 educational and employment goals; and
1818 WHEREAS, Active in politics and government, Mr. Diaz was
1919 appointed to the National Advisory Council for Vocational Education
2020 by President Ronald Reagan, and he served on the Texas Board of
2121 Criminal Justice and the Texas Private Industry Council; in
2222 addition, he was a vice president of the Rio Grande Valley
2323 Partnership, a director of the Texas Retail Grocers Association,
2424 and an advisor to the College of Business Administration at The
2525 University of Texas--Pan American, and he was on the board of
2626 directors of St. Mary's University; and
2727 WHEREAS, This esteemed community leader further
2828 distinguished himself as one of the founders of the Rio Grande City
2929 Volunteer Fire Department and as an organizer of the Rio Grande City
3030 Christmas Festival, and he was a charter member of the Rio Grande
3131 City Rotary Club; he was also a valued member of the Masonic Hope
3232 Lodge No. 471 and of the Scottish Rite 32nd degree, and he had
3333 served as Worshipful Master; and
3434 WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Diaz enjoyed the love
3535 and support of his wife, Ramona, and he took great pride in his six
3636 children, Mary E. Recio, Belinda Diaz, Pete Diaz III, Hiram Diaz,
3737 Aaron Diaz, and Monica D. Aguillon; and
3838 WHEREAS, Pete Diaz was an inspiration to all those who were
3939 fortunate enough to share in his love and friendship, and his
4040 remarkable legacy continues to resonate in Rio Grande City and
4141 beyond; now, therefore, be it
4242 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4343 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Pete Diaz, Jr.; and,
4444 be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4747 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Pete Diaz.
