5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Residents of Rio Grande City fondly remember Pete |

6 | 6 | | Diaz, Jr., a cherished friend and a dedicated civic leader, who died |
---|
7 | 7 | | on March 17, 1999, at the age of 71; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, The son of Pedro Diaz, Sr., and Aurora Valverde |
---|
9 | 9 | | Diaz, Pete Diaz was born on November 17, 1927, in Rio Grande City; |
---|
10 | 10 | | he went on to become an entrepreneur and the proprietor of the |
---|
11 | 11 | | Valley Mart grocery store chain, as well as a management company, a |
---|
12 | 12 | | Spanish language radio station, a motor inn, a golf course, and 14 |
---|
13 | 13 | | shopping centers, and his company, Diaz Enterprises, was one of the |
---|
14 | 14 | | largest Hispanic-owned businesses in the country; moreover, he |
---|
15 | 15 | | believed in helping others to succeed, and he frequently provided |
---|
16 | 16 | | assistance to his fellow citizens to help them achieve their |
---|
17 | 17 | | educational and employment goals; and |
---|
18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Active in politics and government, Mr. Diaz was |
---|
19 | 19 | | appointed to the National Advisory Council for Vocational Education |
---|
20 | 20 | | by President Ronald Reagan, and he served on the Texas Board of |
---|
21 | 21 | | Criminal Justice and the Texas Private Industry Council; in |
---|
22 | 22 | | addition, he was a vice president of the Rio Grande Valley |
---|
23 | 23 | | Partnership, a director of the Texas Retail Grocers Association, |
---|
24 | 24 | | and an advisor to the College of Business Administration at The |
---|
25 | 25 | | University of Texas--Pan American, and he was on the board of |
---|
26 | 26 | | directors of St. Mary's University; and |
---|
27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed community leader further |
---|
28 | 28 | | distinguished himself as one of the founders of the Rio Grande City |
---|
29 | 29 | | Volunteer Fire Department and as an organizer of the Rio Grande City |
---|
30 | 30 | | Christmas Festival, and he was a charter member of the Rio Grande |
---|
31 | 31 | | City Rotary Club; he was also a valued member of the Masonic Hope |
---|
32 | 32 | | Lodge No. 471 and of the Scottish Rite 32nd degree, and he had |
---|
33 | 33 | | served as Worshipful Master; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Diaz enjoyed the love |
---|
35 | 35 | | and support of his wife, Ramona, and he took great pride in his six |
---|
36 | 36 | | children, Mary E. Recio, Belinda Diaz, Pete Diaz III, Hiram Diaz, |
---|
37 | 37 | | Aaron Diaz, and Monica D. Aguillon; and |
---|
38 | 38 | | WHEREAS, Pete Diaz was an inspiration to all those who were |
---|
39 | 39 | | fortunate enough to share in his love and friendship, and his |
---|
40 | 40 | | remarkable legacy continues to resonate in Rio Grande City and |
---|
41 | 41 | | beyond; now, therefore, be it |
---|
42 | 42 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
43 | 43 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Pete Diaz, Jr.; and, |
---|
44 | 44 | | be it further |
---|
45 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
---|
46 | 46 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
---|
47 | 47 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Pete Diaz. |
