44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Howard E. Jefferson of Houston has distinguished
66 himself through his efforts to better the city and state he calls
77 home; and
88 WHEREAS, A native of Mississippi, Mr. Jefferson holds a
99 bachelor's degree in chemistry from Southern University in
1010 Louisiana and a master's degree in education administration from
1111 the University of Houston; he also studied for a year at The
1212 University of Texas at Austin, where he was awarded a science and
1313 mathematics fellowship; and
1414 WHEREAS, Mr. Jefferson served nearly three decades as an
1515 assistant superintendent of the Houston Independent School
1616 District before going into business for himself as owner and chair
1717 of Protectors Insurance and Financial Services; in addition, he
1818 served as campaign manager for U.S. Congressman Al Green; and
1919 WHEREAS, Devoted to social justice, Mr. Jefferson has
2020 advocated for disenfranchised individuals and worked to increase
2121 opportunities for African American-owned businesses in Texas; he is
2222 the former president of the NAACP Houston Branch and currently
2323 serves as chair of the NAACP political action committee; moreover,
2424 Governor Rick Perry appointed him to the select committee for
2525 recommendations to Texas Southern University; and
2626 WHEREAS, Mr. Jefferson is supported in his endeavors by his
2727 wife, Zona G. Jefferson, and his life is further enriched by three
2828 children, Tangela, Audrey, and Jewel, as well as a grandson, Devin;
2929 he is an active member of Windsor Village United Methodist Church;
3030 and
3131 WHEREAS, Committed to serving others, Howard Jefferson has
3232 generously devoted his time for the benefit of his community, and he
3333 has earned the admiration and appreciation of all who know him; now,
3434 therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3636 Legislature hereby honor Howard E. Jefferson for his contributions
3737 to his fellow citizens and extend to him sincere best wishes for
3838 continued success and happiness; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4040 prepared for Mr. Jefferson as an expression of high regard by the
4141 Texas House of Representatives.
