| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Howard E. Jefferson of Houston has distinguished |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | himself through his efforts to better the city and state he calls |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | home; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Mississippi, Mr. Jefferson holds a |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | bachelor's degree in chemistry from Southern University in |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Louisiana and a master's degree in education administration from |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the University of Houston; he also studied for a year at The |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | University of Texas at Austin, where he was awarded a science and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | mathematics fellowship; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jefferson served nearly three decades as an |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | assistant superintendent of the Houston Independent School |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | District before going into business for himself as owner and chair |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | of Protectors Insurance and Financial Services; in addition, he |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | served as campaign manager for U.S. Congressman Al Green; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Devoted to social justice, Mr. Jefferson has |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | advocated for disenfranchised individuals and worked to increase |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | opportunities for African American-owned businesses in Texas; he is |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the former president of the NAACP Houston Branch and currently |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | serves as chair of the NAACP political action committee; moreover, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Governor Rick Perry appointed him to the select committee for |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | recommendations to Texas Southern University; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jefferson is supported in his endeavors by his |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | wife, Zona G. Jefferson, and his life is further enriched by three |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | children, Tangela, Audrey, and Jewel, as well as a grandson, Devin; |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | he is an active member of Windsor Village United Methodist Church; |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Committed to serving others, Howard Jefferson has |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | generously devoted his time for the benefit of his community, and he |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | has earned the admiration and appreciation of all who know him; now, |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | therefore, be it |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

| 36 | 36 | | Legislature hereby honor Howard E. Jefferson for his contributions |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | to his fellow citizens and extend to him sincere best wishes for |

| 38 | 38 | | continued success and happiness; and, be it further |
