| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Steve Greenberg has proven himself to be a valued |

| 6 | 6 | | supporter of the Juneteenth celebration in Galveston; and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | celebrates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which effectively freed |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the 250,000 slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Born and raised in Galveston, Mr. Greenberg has long |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | played a leading role in civic affairs; he is a former member of the |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | Galveston City Council and the founder of the Galveston Coalition |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | of Concerned Taxpayers; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The vice president of Landry's Restaurants, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Mr. Greenberg has represented his employer at the annual Juneteenth |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Banquet and Ashton Villa Prayer Vigil and Breakfast, and he has also |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | benefited numerous African American programs and activities on |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Galveston Island; in 2008, he created the Landry's Juneteenth |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Annual Award, which honors the valuable contributions of local |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | citizens; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Through his dedication, Steve Greenberg has helped |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | to heighten awareness of the history of Juneteenth for visitors and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | residents of Galveston alike; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Legislature hereby commend Steve Greenberg for his outstanding |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | efforts in behalf of Juneteenth activities in Galveston and extend |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; |
