44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Tilman Fertitta has proven himself to be a valued
66 supporter of the Juneteenth celebration in Galveston; and
77 WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth
88 celebrates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the
99 first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June
1010 19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which effectively freed
1111 the 250,000 slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and
1212 WHEREAS, A Galveston native, Mr. Fertitta is the chief
1313 executive officer of Landry's Restaurants, overseeing operations
1414 for the well-known dining corporation; and
1515 WHEREAS, Mr. Fertitta has provided a complimentary brunch for
1616 the 500 attendees of the annual Juneteenth celebration at the
1717 historic Ashton Villa in Galveston for many years, and that
1818 tradition continues in 2009; and
1919 WHEREAS, Through his dedication, Tilman Fertitta has helped
2020 to heighten awareness of the history of Juneteenth for visitors and
2121 residents of Galveston alike; now, therefore, be it
2222 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2323 Legislature hereby commend Tilman Fertitta for his outstanding
2424 efforts in behalf of Juneteenth activities in Galveston and extend
2525 to him sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness;
2626 and, be it further
2727 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
2828 prepared for Mr. Fertitta as an expression of high regard by the
2929 Texas House of Representatives.
