| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Heber Taylor has proven himself to be a valued |

| 6 | 6 | | supporter of the Juneteenth celebration in Galveston; and |

| 7 | 7 | | WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth |

| 8 | 8 | | celebrates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | 19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which effectively freed |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | the 250,000 slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Taylor serves as editor of the oldest newspaper |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | in Texas, the Galveston County Daily News; the paper is the flagship |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | publication of Southern Newspapers and caters to 33,000 weekday |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | subscribers; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, The Daily News provides exceptional coverage of |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Juneteenth and helps keep the public informed about related |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | activities; the paper is the only daily news service in the county, |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and its support over the past decade has contributed to increased |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | participation in the observance; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Through his dedication, Heber Taylor has helped to |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | heighten awareness of the history of Juneteenth for visitors and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | residents of Galveston alike; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Legislature hereby commend Heber Taylor for his outstanding efforts |

| 26 | 26 | | in behalf of Juneteenth activities in Galveston and extend to him |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it |
