55 WHEREAS, Heber Taylor has proven himself to be a valued
66 supporter of the Juneteenth celebration in Galveston; and
77 WHEREAS, An official state holiday since 1980, Juneteenth
88 celebrates an important milestone in human rights in Texas, the
99 first reading of the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston on June
1010 19, 1865, by Union general Gordon Granger, which effectively freed
1111 the 250,000 slaves in Texas at the end of the Civil War; and
1212 WHEREAS, Mr. Taylor serves as editor of the oldest newspaper
1313 in Texas, the Galveston County Daily News; the paper is the flagship
1414 publication of Southern Newspapers and caters to 33,000 weekday
1515 subscribers; and
1616 WHEREAS, The Daily News provides exceptional coverage of
1717 Juneteenth and helps keep the public informed about related
1818 activities; the paper is the only daily news service in the county,
1919 and its support over the past decade has contributed to increased
2020 participation in the observance; and
2121 WHEREAS, Through his dedication, Heber Taylor has helped to
2222 heighten awareness of the history of Juneteenth for visitors and
2323 residents of Galveston alike; now, therefore, be it
2424 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2525 Legislature hereby commend Heber Taylor for his outstanding efforts
2626 in behalf of Juneteenth activities in Galveston and extend to him
2727 sincere best wishes for continued success and happiness; and, be it
2828 further
2929 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3030 prepared for Mr. Taylor as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3131 House of Representatives.
