44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of
66 Dr. Joseph G. Suckarieh of Midland, who died on May 3, 2009, at the
77 age of 64; and
88 WHEREAS, Joseph Suckarieh was born in Damascus, Syria, on
99 July 19, 1944, to Gabriel Joseph and Claire Sarki Suckarieh; and
1010 WHEREAS, After earning his medical degree from Damascus
1111 University, Dr. Suckarieh performed his general surgery internship
1212 and residency at the University of Cincinnati; in Cincinnati, he
1313 met the former Judy Carol Wilson, and they were married in 1976; and
1414 WHEREAS, Dr. Suckarieh did his thoracic and cardiovascular
1515 surgery residency at Wayne State University in Detroit from 1976 to
1616 1978, and from 1978 to 1989, he practiced medicine in Lubbock; he
1717 became an American citizen in 1980; and
1818 WHEREAS, Since 1989, Dr. Suckarieh had been a member of the
1919 surgical team at the Heart Institute of Midland Memorial Hospital,
2020 where he performed his first open-heart surgery; he played a
2121 lifesaving role for many cardiac patients in Midland, and he earned
2222 the deep respect and lasting affection of colleagues and patients
2323 alike for his skill, vitality, and compassion; and
2424 WHEREAS, A man of strong religious faith, Dr. Suckarieh was
2525 active in the Catholic Church; he was a member of St. Stephen's
2626 Catholic Church and Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, and he
2727 often worked through the church to give of his time and effort to
2828 the less fortunate, both in Midland and in his native Syria; and
2929 WHEREAS, A loving husband and father, Joseph Suckarieh
3030 dedicated his life to healing, and though he was taken too soon, he
3131 leaves behind a legacy of compassion and devotion that will live
3232 forever in the hearts of all who knew him; now, therefore, be it
3333 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3434 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Dr. Joseph
3535 G. Suckarieh and extend sincere condolences to the members of his
3636 family: to his wife of 33 years, Judy Suckarieh; to his children,
3737 Jessica Suckarieh Weinzel and her husband, John, Amy Suckarieh
3838 Gorham and her husband, Alan, Elizabeth Suckarieh and her
3939 companion, James Hamilton, Nadia Suckarieh, Gabriel Joseph
4040 Suckarieh, Emily Suckarieh, and Kiki and Topher; to his sister,
4141 Jeanette Talamas, and her husband, Nasri; to his brother, George
4242 Suckarieh, and his wife, Nancy; to his grandchildren, Sidney
4343 Weinzel, Jordan Gorham, and Willem Weinzel; and to his other
4444 relatives and friends; and, be it further
4545 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4646 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4747 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. Joseph
4848 Suckarieh.
