55 WHEREAS, Senior Day is taking place on February 10, 2009, at
66 the State Capitol, and this occasion offers a welcome opportunity
77 to pay tribute to the many contributions made by the senior citizens
88 of the Lone Star State; and
99 WHEREAS, Sponsored by the Texas Senior Advocacy Coalition,
1010 this year's event is focused on the theme "Seniors--the Heart of
1111 Texas"; that sentiment is indeed a fitting tribute to the
1212 significant role these individuals play in communities across our
1313 state; and
1414 WHEREAS, Through the decades, they have helped Texas to
1515 achieve greatness in a broad range of fields, including industry,
1616 the arts, agriculture, education, information technology, space
1717 exploration, and more; and
1818 WHEREAS, Witnesses to monumental events during their
1919 lifetimes, many residents age 60 and older have served their nation
2020 in times of war, and they have also helped maintain the peace in
2121 postings around the globe; and
2222 WHEREAS, The experience and wisdom gained by senior Texans
2323 make them revered mentors and role models to younger generations;
2424 among the lessons they teach is the value of leading an active and
2525 healthy life well into the golden years, and their ongoing
2626 achievements are not only inspiring but also represent valuable
2727 contributions that greatly benefit their fellow citizens; and
2828 WHEREAS, Today, Texas has approximately three million
2929 residents over age 60, and that number is expected to grow to more
3030 than five million by the year 2020; strong in numbers and
3131 distinguished by their great endeavors, past and present, the
3232 seniors of the Lone Star State are a valuable resource for all
3333 Texans, and they are indeed deserving of respect and admiration;
3434 now, therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3636 Legislature hereby recognize February 10, 2009, as Senior Day at
3737 the State Capitol and extend to all participants best wishes for an
3838 enjoyable and rewarding visit to Austin.
