5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The family and friends of United States Army Staff |

6 | 6 | | Sergeant Eric Thomas Duckworth sustained a heavy loss with the |

7 | 7 | | death of this courageous soldier in Iraq on October 10, 2007, at the |
---|
8 | 8 | | age of 26; and |
---|
9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Assigned to the 759th Military Police Battalion, |
---|
10 | 10 | | 89th Military Police Brigade, and based at Fort Carson, Colorado, |
---|
11 | 11 | | Sergeant Duckworth deployed to Iraq in August 2006 for a 15-month |
---|
12 | 12 | | tour of duty, during which he worked to train Iraqi police; he was |
---|
13 | 13 | | mortally wounded while leading a convoy in the city of Baghdad; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, Eric Duckworth was born in Dallas on October 30, |
---|
15 | 15 | | 1980, and grew up in Plano, where he played youth baseball and |
---|
16 | 16 | | football; he attended Plano East High School during his senior year |
---|
17 | 17 | | and graduated from Clear Lake High School in Houston in 1999; from |
---|
18 | 18 | | the time he was a boy, Sergeant Duckworth aspired to serve in both |
---|
19 | 19 | | the military and law enforcement, and he got an early start on his |
---|
20 | 20 | | career path in high school as a stellar member of the Army JROTC; |
---|
21 | 21 | | and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Sergeant Duckworth enlisted in the armed forces at |
---|
23 | 23 | | the age of 18 and served initially in the infantry; during his eight |
---|
24 | 24 | | years in the military, he excelled at his work and won the deep |
---|
25 | 25 | | respect of his commanding officers and comrades for his consummate |
---|
26 | 26 | | professionalism, his even temperament and composure under stress, |
---|
27 | 27 | | and his unfailing readiness to lend a helping hand; admired for his |
---|
28 | 28 | | outstanding qualities as a soldier, he was no less treasured for the |
---|
29 | 29 | | warmth of his heart, his gift for friendship, and his cheerful, |
---|
30 | 30 | | infectious smile; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, A passionate sports fan, Sergeant Duckworth was a |
---|
32 | 32 | | keen NASCAR enthusiast and yielded to no one in his devotion to the |
---|
33 | 33 | | Dallas Cowboys; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Above all, Eric Duckworth loved his wife, Sonya, his |
---|
35 | 35 | | stepdaughter, Kaylynn, and his children, Madison and Michael; and |

36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, In his dedication to duty, honor, and this country, |

37 | 37 | | Sergeant Eric Duckworth exemplified the highest ideals of the |

38 | 38 | | United States armed forces, and those who were blessed to share in |
---|
39 | 39 | | the richness of his life will forever carry him close in their |
---|
40 | 40 | | hearts; now, therefore, be it |

41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Staff Sergeant Eric |
