44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, The family and friends of United States Army Staff
66 Sergeant Eric Thomas Duckworth sustained a heavy loss with the
77 death of this courageous soldier in Iraq on October 10, 2007, at the
88 age of 26; and
99 WHEREAS, Assigned to the 759th Military Police Battalion,
1010 89th Military Police Brigade, and based at Fort Carson, Colorado,
1111 Sergeant Duckworth deployed to Iraq in August 2006 for a 15-month
1212 tour of duty, during which he worked to train Iraqi police; he was
1313 mortally wounded while leading a convoy in the city of Baghdad; and
1414 WHEREAS, Eric Duckworth was born in Dallas on October 30,
1515 1980, and grew up in Plano, where he played youth baseball and
1616 football; he attended Plano East High School during his senior year
1717 and graduated from Clear Lake High School in Houston in 1999; from
1818 the time he was a boy, Sergeant Duckworth aspired to serve in both
1919 the military and law enforcement, and he got an early start on his
2020 career path in high school as a stellar member of the Army JROTC;
2121 and
2222 WHEREAS, Sergeant Duckworth enlisted in the armed forces at
2323 the age of 18 and served initially in the infantry; during his eight
2424 years in the military, he excelled at his work and won the deep
2525 respect of his commanding officers and comrades for his consummate
2626 professionalism, his even temperament and composure under stress,
2727 and his unfailing readiness to lend a helping hand; admired for his
2828 outstanding qualities as a soldier, he was no less treasured for the
2929 warmth of his heart, his gift for friendship, and his cheerful,
3030 infectious smile; and
3131 WHEREAS, A passionate sports fan, Sergeant Duckworth was a
3232 keen NASCAR enthusiast and yielded to no one in his devotion to the
3333 Dallas Cowboys; and
3434 WHEREAS, Above all, Eric Duckworth loved his wife, Sonya, his
3535 stepdaughter, Kaylynn, and his children, Madison and Michael; and
3636 WHEREAS, In his dedication to duty, honor, and this country,
3737 Sergeant Eric Duckworth exemplified the highest ideals of the
3838 United States armed forces, and those who were blessed to share in
3939 the richness of his life will forever carry him close in their
4040 hearts; now, therefore, be it
4141 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4242 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Staff Sergeant Eric
4343 Thomas Duckworth and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
4444 family: to his wife, Sonya Lynn Duckworth; to his children, Kaylynn
4545 Cox and Madison and Michael Duckworth; to his mother, Ila
4646 Duckworth; to his father and stepmother, Michael and Barbara
4747 Duckworth; to his brother, Andrew Duckworth; and to his other
4848 relatives and many friends; and, be it further
4949 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5050 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5151 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of U.S. Army
5252 Staff Sergeant Eric Thomas Duckworth.
