44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of John
66 Ernest Phillips of Dallas, who passed away on March 20, 2009, at the
77 age of 69; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on a farm near Italy, Texas, on April 10, 1939,
99 John Phillips relocated to Levelland as a youth, and he went on to
1010 graduate from Hardin-Simmons University and later Baylor Law
1111 School; in addition, he earned a master's degree from the Dedman
1212 School of Law at Southern Methodist University, and he completed
1313 the Ranch Management Program at Texas Christian University;
1414 answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Phillips joined the United
1515 States Army, and he was commissioned as a first lieutenant and
1616 awarded the Army Commendation Medal; and
1717 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan became a trial lawyer, working
1818 on numerous cases and serving as the president of the Dallas
1919 Association of Defense Lawyers; for a decade, he led the General
2020 Litigation Division at Strasburger and Price, LLP, in Dallas, and
2121 after 33 years with the firm, he retired as a senior partner in
2222 2001; on his retirement, Mr. Phillips continued raising Aberdeen
2323 Angus cattle in Italy; he was also active in his community of faith,
2424 and he was a deacon at Central Baptist Church of Italy and at Park
2525 Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, where he was a member of the Bob
2626 and Ruth Glaze Sunday School class for more than 20 years; and
2727 WHEREAS, John Phillips was a dedicated professional and a
2828 caring citizen, and although he will be deeply missed, he will
2929 forever be remembered with great admiration and affection by those
3030 who were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it
3131 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3232 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Ernest
3333 Phillips and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family:
3434 to his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara; to his son, John Edd, and
3535 his wife, Lisa; to his daughter, Jan; to his grandson, Walter; to
3636 his mother, Ernestine Phillips; to his brother, Joe Don Phillips,
3737 and his sister, Tina Swenson; and to his other relatives and
3838 friends; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4040 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4141 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Ernest
4242 Phillips.
