| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of John |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Ernest Phillips of Dallas, who passed away on March 20, 2009, at the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | age of 69; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born on a farm near Italy, Texas, on April 10, 1939, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | John Phillips relocated to Levelland as a youth, and he went on to |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | graduate from Hardin-Simmons University and later Baylor Law |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | School; in addition, he earned a master's degree from the Dedman |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | School of Law at Southern Methodist University, and he completed |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the Ranch Management Program at Texas Christian University; |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Phillips joined the United |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | States Army, and he was commissioned as a first lieutenant and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | awarded the Army Commendation Medal; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan became a trial lawyer, working |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | on numerous cases and serving as the president of the Dallas |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Association of Defense Lawyers; for a decade, he led the General |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | Litigation Division at Strasburger and Price, LLP, in Dallas, and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | after 33 years with the firm, he retired as a senior partner in |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | 2001; on his retirement, Mr. Phillips continued raising Aberdeen |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Angus cattle in Italy; he was also active in his community of faith, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | and he was a deacon at Central Baptist Church of Italy and at Park |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Cities Baptist Church in Dallas, where he was a member of the Bob |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | and Ruth Glaze Sunday School class for more than 20 years; and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | WHEREAS, John Phillips was a dedicated professional and a |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | caring citizen, and although he will be deeply missed, he will |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | forever be remembered with great admiration and affection by those |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | who were fortunate enough to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Ernest |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Phillips and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: |

| 34 | 34 | | to his wife of nearly 50 years, Barbara; to his son, John Edd, and |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | his wife, Lisa; to his daughter, Jan; to his grandson, Walter; to |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | his mother, Ernestine Phillips; to his brother, Joe Don Phillips, |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | and his sister, Tina Swenson; and to his other relatives and |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | friends; and, be it further |

| 39 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
