44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of admired
66 Texas journalist Jane Ely of Houston, who died on May 4, 2009, at
77 the age of 69; and
88 WHEREAS, Born in 1940, Jane Ely was a native Texan, the
99 daughter of Fort Worth banker and cattle broker William Ely; and
1010 WHEREAS, In the mid-1960s, Ms. Ely learned her trade by
1111 working as a police reporter for the Houston Post, and she went on
1212 to become a political writer and assistant city editor for that
1313 paper; in 1988, Ms. Ely moved to the Houston Chronicle, where she
1414 covered national politics before becoming an editorial page
1515 columnist; and
1616 WHEREAS, Ms. Ely was respected by her colleagues as well as by
1717 the people they covered for her willingness to ask direct,
1818 hard-hitting questions, and one of her editors at the Chronicle
1919 described her as "sharp as a tack, hard as nails, and as subtle as a
2020 ball-peen hammer"; and
2121 WHEREAS, Former Texas lieutenant governor Bill Hobby, who had
2222 also been her boss at the Houston Post, called her one of the finest
2323 reporters he'd ever known, and former president George H. W. Bush
2424 said she was "the best political reporter of her generation"; she
2525 retired in 2004; and
2626 WHEREAS, This veteran, old-school journalist will long be
2727 remembered for her droll and self-deprecating wit, her love of a
2828 good time, her keen understanding of politics, and her commitment
2929 to informing and enlightening her readers; now, therefore, be it
3030 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3131 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jane Ely and extend
3232 sincere condolences to her sister, Suzanne Ely, and to her other
3333 relatives and friends; and, be it further
3434 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3535 prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
3636 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jane Ely.
