| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of admired |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Texas journalist Jane Ely of Houston, who died on May 4, 2009, at |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | the age of 69; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in 1940, Jane Ely was a native Texan, the |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | daughter of Fort Worth banker and cattle broker William Ely; and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, In the mid-1960s, Ms. Ely learned her trade by |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | working as a police reporter for the Houston Post, and she went on |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | to become a political writer and assistant city editor for that |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | paper; in 1988, Ms. Ely moved to the Houston Chronicle, where she |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | covered national politics before becoming an editorial page |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | columnist; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Ely was respected by her colleagues as well as by |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | the people they covered for her willingness to ask direct, |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | hard-hitting questions, and one of her editors at the Chronicle |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | described her as "sharp as a tack, hard as nails, and as subtle as a |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | ball-peen hammer"; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Former Texas lieutenant governor Bill Hobby, who had |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | also been her boss at the Houston Post, called her one of the finest |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | reporters he'd ever known, and former president George H. W. Bush |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | said she was "the best political reporter of her generation"; she |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | retired in 2004; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, This veteran, old-school journalist will long be |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | remembered for her droll and self-deprecating wit, her love of a |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | good time, her keen understanding of politics, and her commitment |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | to informing and enlightening her readers; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Jane Ely and extend |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | sincere condolences to her sister, Suzanne Ely, and to her other |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

| 35 | 35 | | prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jane Ely. |
