| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Ed Smith retired from Macy's on April 30, 2009, |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | bringing a close to his notable career as an executive for the |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | department store chain; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A Michigan native, Mr. Smith attended El Camino |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | College and California State University, Dominguez Hills, and |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War; he began his |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | career in 1972 as credit promotion manager for Foley's Department |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Store, which later became part of Macy's; he held various positions |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | as he rose through the ranks and retired as vice president of public |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | relations, special events, community affairs, and visitor services |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | for the Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana region; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has also been very active in community |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | endeavors, serving on the boards of directors for several nonprofit |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | agencies, chairing numerous fund-raising events, and receiving |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | multiple accolades for his work; among the organizations to benefit |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | from his input are the AIDS Foundation Houston, the Alley Theatre, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | BRASS, Career & Recovery Resources, Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos, |

| 22 | 22 | | Crisis Intervention of Houston, Houston Downtown Alliance, the Gulf |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Coast Workforce Board, the Houston Area Urban League, Houston |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | OASIS, Ronald McDonald House, SEARCH, Stages Repertory Theatre, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Teach For America, and the University of Houston Graduate School of |

| 26 | 26 | | Social Work, among others; in his leisure time, Mr. Smith enjoys |

| 27 | 27 | | downhill skiing, travel, and reading; and |

| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Looking to pursue new business opportunities, he has |

| 29 | 29 | | formed Ed Smith & Associates, LLC, and plans to devote himself to |

| 30 | 30 | | this venture in the years ahead; for more than 3-1/2 decades, Mr. |

| 31 | 31 | | Smith has worked diligently in behalf of his company and his |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | community, and he may indeed reflect with pride on a career well |

| 33 | 33 | | spent as he embarks on an exciting new chapter in his life; now, |

| 35 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
