44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Ed Smith retired from Macy's on April 30, 2009,
66 bringing a close to his notable career as an executive for the
77 department store chain; and
88 WHEREAS, A Michigan native, Mr. Smith attended El Camino
99 College and California State University, Dominguez Hills, and
1010 served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War; he began his
1111 career in 1972 as credit promotion manager for Foley's Department
1212 Store, which later became part of Macy's; he held various positions
1313 as he rose through the ranks and retired as vice president of public
1414 relations, special events, community affairs, and visitor services
1515 for the Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana region; and
1616 WHEREAS, Mr. Smith has also been very active in community
1717 endeavors, serving on the boards of directors for several nonprofit
1818 agencies, chairing numerous fund-raising events, and receiving
1919 multiple accolades for his work; among the organizations to benefit
2020 from his input are the AIDS Foundation Houston, the Alley Theatre,
2121 BRASS, Career & Recovery Resources, Casa de Esperanza de los Ninos,
2222 Crisis Intervention of Houston, Houston Downtown Alliance, the Gulf
2323 Coast Workforce Board, the Houston Area Urban League, Houston
2424 OASIS, Ronald McDonald House, SEARCH, Stages Repertory Theatre,
2525 Teach For America, and the University of Houston Graduate School of
2626 Social Work, among others; in his leisure time, Mr. Smith enjoys
2727 downhill skiing, travel, and reading; and
2828 WHEREAS, Looking to pursue new business opportunities, he has
2929 formed Ed Smith & Associates, LLC, and plans to devote himself to
3030 this venture in the years ahead; for more than 3-1/2 decades, Mr.
3131 Smith has worked diligently in behalf of his company and his
3232 community, and he may indeed reflect with pride on a career well
3333 spent as he embarks on an exciting new chapter in his life; now,
3434 therefore, be it
3535 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3636 Legislature hereby congratulate Ed Smith on the occasion of his
3737 retirement from Macy's and extend to him sincere best wishes for
3838 continued success and happiness; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4040 prepared for Mr. Smith as an expression of high regard by the Texas
4141 House of Representatives.
