5	5	WHEREAS, The family and friends of U.S. Army Corporal Thomas
6	6	Layton Hilbert of Venus suffered an immeasurable loss with the
7	7	death of this valiant soldier on September 7, 2007, at the age of
8	8	20; and
9	9	WHEREAS, A cavalry scout assigned to the 1st Squadron, 9th
10	10	Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division,
11	11	stationed at Fort Bliss, Corporal Hilbert was mortally injured
12	12	during combat operations in Mosul, Iraq; a specialist at the time of
13	13	his death, he was posthumously promoted to corporal and awarded a
14	14	Purple Heart and a Bronze Star; and
15	15	WHEREAS, Born on January 14, 1987, Thomas Hilbert served his
16	16	community as a firefighter with the Venus Volunteer Fire
17	17	Department; he graduated in 2005 from Venus High School and
18	18	subsequently enlisted in the army; an enthusiastic and endearing
19	19	young man, he was devoted to his family, friends, and fellow
20	20	soldiers; and
21	21	WHEREAS, Corporal Hilbert was the recipient of several
22	22	decorations, including the National Defense Service Medal, the Army
23	23	Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Iraq Campaign
24	24	Medal; and
25	25	WHEREAS, Our state and nation are fortunate to have men and
26	26	women whose love of country leads them to military duty, and time
27	27	can never diminish the profound debt that Americans owe to Thomas
28	28	Hilbert for the service he undertook and the sacrifice he rendered;
29	29	and
30	30	WHEREAS, Through his selfless devotion to duty, honor, and
31	31	his country, Corporal Hilbert embodied the highest ideals of the
32	32	U.S. armed forces, and his memory will be forever treasured by those
33	33	who shared in the blessing of his life; now, therefore, be it
34	34	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
35	35	Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Corporal Thomas
36	36	Layton Hilbert and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his
37	37	family: to his parents, Thomas and Theresa Hilbert; to his sisters,
38	38	BillieJo Alexander and her husband, Alex, and Jennifer Jones; to
39	39	his grandparents, Layton and Janet James; to his nieces, Lauren and
40	40	Kaitlin Alexander; to his nephews, Jacob Jones and William
41	41	Alexander; and to his other relatives and many friends; and, be it
42	42	further
43	43	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
44	44	prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
45	45	Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Corporal
46	46	Thomas Hilbert.
