44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Ron Whitlock has distinguished himself as a
66 successful broadcaster and a dedicated civic leader, and it is
77 indeed a pleasure to recognize his outstanding service to his
88 community; and
99 WHEREAS, Raised on a farm in San Juan, Texas, Ron Whitlock
1010 picked cotton as a youth, and he went on to graduate from PSJA High
1111 School; he also attended The University of Texas--Pan American and
1212 Texas A&M University--Kingsville, and he launched his broadcasting
1313 career as a commercial manager at a Raymondville radio station; as
1414 he learned the radio business, he was promoted to positions of
1515 greater responsibility, becoming the news director for KRIO-910 AM
1616 in McAllen and earning numerous awards for his coverage of the
1717 hurricanes that struck the Rio Grande Valley in the 1960s; and
1818 WHEREAS, With his transition to television, Mr. Whitlock went
1919 to work for KRGV-TV in Weslaco and then joined KIII-TV in Corpus
2020 Christi as the managing editor of the news team and later the
2121 evening news anchor; during his time in Corpus Christi, he also
2222 handled public relations for the Corpus Christi Independent School
2323 District and was president of the Texas School Public Relations
2424 Association and of the Volunteer Services State Council, which
2525 represented 26 Texas Department of Mental Health and Mental
2626 Retardation facilities; in addition, he began consulting work for
2727 private companies and state agencies in the areas of marketing,
2828 public relations, and advertising; and
2929 WHEREAS, After he had built four radio stations in Texas and a
3030 booming trade show business, Mr. Whitlock returned to television as
3131 the host and executive producer of the public affairs program,
3232 Borderline, on KRGV-TV; known today as RW Reports, Mr. Whitlock's
3333 show covers issues that are important to the residents of the border
3434 region, and he regularly interviews policy makers; and
3535 WHEREAS, Active in numerous organizations, Mr. Whitlock
3636 established the Rio Grande Valley Press Club and was the vice
3737 president of the United Press International Broadcasters of Texas;
3838 he was also on the boards of the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, the
3939 local chapter of the American Red Cross, and Methodist Church San
4040 Juan, and he was a founder and president of the Sunrise Rotary Club
4141 of Corpus Christi and a participant in Leadership Corpus Christi;
4242 and
4343 WHEREAS, Ron Whitlock has remained committed to South Texas
4444 through his professional and civic endeavors, and he has earned the
4545 lasting respect and admiration of his colleagues and fellow
4646 citizens; now, therefore, be it
4747 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
4848 Legislature hereby honor Ron Whitlock for his successful career in
4949 broadcasting and his outstanding service to his community and
5050 extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and
5151 happiness; and, be it further
5252 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
5353 prepared for Mr. Whitlock as an expression of high regard by the
5454 Texas House of Representatives.
