5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family, friends, and former colleagues are mourning |
---|
6 | 6 | | the loss of veteran Texas newspaperman Charles Raymond Bell, Jr., |
---|
7 | 7 | | of Waxahachie, who died on March 5, 2009, at the age of 77; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, A native of Waco, Ray Bell began his career in |
---|
9 | 9 | | journalism at the age of 16, when he graduated from high school and |
---|
10 | 10 | | began a full-time job with the Hillsboro Daily Mirror; he started as |
---|
11 | 11 | | an assistant sports editor but was soon promoted to sports editor; |
---|
12 | 12 | | he also took on the job of writing about local engagements, |
---|
13 | 13 | | weddings, and parties and eventually was given responsibility for |
---|
14 | 14 | | the entire paper; and |
---|
15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Picking up a college education piecemeal between |
---|
16 | 16 | | jobs, Mr. Bell was a journalist for the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, |
---|
17 | 17 | | the Temple Daily Telegram, the Charlotte Observer, the Waco |
---|
18 | 18 | | Tribune-Herald, the Dallas Times Herald, and the Fort Worth Press; |
---|
19 | 19 | | and |
---|
20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, He spent an exceptional 20 years with the Dallas |
---|
21 | 21 | | Morning News, where his work in the newsroom earned him the respect |
---|
22 | 22 | | of his editors and colleagues; he could handle myriad |
---|
23 | 23 | | responsibilities, and he received numerous awards, including ones |
---|
24 | 24 | | for his firsthand report of surviving a heart attack in the paper's |
---|
25 | 25 | | parking lot in 1983; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Bell also worked for the Associated Press in |
---|
27 | 27 | | Atlanta, sold articles to national magazines, such as The Saturday |
---|
28 | 28 | | Evening Post and Vanity Fair, and published six books, including |
---|
29 | 29 | | The Hiroshima Pilot, which he coauthored with William Bradford |
---|
30 | 30 | | Huie; he taught journalism part-time at El Centro College in Dallas |
---|
31 | 31 | | and worked in public relations; and |
---|
32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Well past his retirement from full-time newspaper |
---|
33 | 33 | | work, Mr. Bell carried on as a journalist, and he covered local high |
---|
34 | 34 | | school football games even as his health began to fail, until about |
---|
35 | 35 | | a year before his death; and |
---|
36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Ray Bell's veins ran with printer's ink for 60 years |
---|
37 | 37 | | as he pursued the trade he loved, and though his final late edition |
---|
38 | 38 | | has been put to bed, memories of the gentle nature and colorful |
---|
39 | 39 | | personality of this old-style journalist will remain to comfort all |
---|
40 | 40 | | those who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
42 | 42 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Charles Raymond Bell, |
---|
43 | 43 | | Jr., and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to |
---|
44 | 44 | | his wife, Barbara Bell; to his sons, Ray Bell III, Don Shaw, and |
---|
45 | 45 | | Kevin Shaw and his wife, Marsha; to his daughter, Monica Prater, and |
---|
46 | 46 | | her husband, Richard; to his five grandchildren and one |
---|
47 | 47 | | great-grandchild; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be |
---|

49 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

51 | 51 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Ray Bell. |
