| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives joins the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | citizens of Valentine in mourning the loss of Ricardo B. Calderon, |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | who died April 19, 2009, at the age of 92; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Richard Calderon was born in Candelaria, Texas, on |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | April 4, 1917, and moved to Valentine with his family while still a |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | young child; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Calderon served in the United States Army during |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | World War II and saw duty in the North African Theater as an |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | engineer technician; he was the survivor of a land mine explosion, |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | which left him with a broken skull and back; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, On his recovery, he attended barber school in |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Lubbock and went on to have a successful career as a barber for more |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | than 40 years, during which time he cut hair for residents of |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Valentine, Van Horn, Marfa, and Pecos; he was very proud of his |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | military service and often shared his stories of that time with |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | others; and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Calderon was an exemplary gentleman who was |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | beloved and respected by many for his courage, strength, and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | generous spirit; he was married to Maria Rios Calderon, and the |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | couple were blessed with two daughters, a son, seven grandchildren, |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and two great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Richard Calderon was a devoted husband, father, and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | grandfather, and he leaves behind a legacy to treasure for those |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | that held him dear; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Ricardo B. Calderon |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | and extend sincere condolences to his family and friends; and, be it |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Richard |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | Calderon. |
