No. 2710 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, September 2010 marks the bicentennial of the initiation of the Mexican revolution by Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the father of Mexican independence and the namesake of Hidalgo County; and WHEREAS, On September 16, 1810, Father Hidalgo led several hundred people in taking the prison in Dolores, Mexico, thus launching the events that culminated in Mexican independence in 1821; the passionate speech the priest delivered on that day, the Grito de Dolores, declaring "death to bad government," has since become known as the "cry for Mexican independence"; and WHEREAS, The year 2010 also marks the 158th anniversary of the creation of Hidalgo County and the convening, on September 2, 1852, of its first county court; and WHEREAS, The 200th anniversary of the beginning of the Mexican War for Independence represents a fitting opportunity to celebrate the heroism and patriotism of Father Hidalgo, as well as the inextricable links between the histories of Mexico and Texas; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize the bicentennial in 2010 of the Grito de Dolores and celebrate the continuing inspiration of Father Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.
