55 WHEREAS, September 2010 marks the bicentennial of the
66 initiation of the Mexican revolution by Father Miguel Hidalgo y
77 Costilla, the father of Mexican independence and the namesake of
88 Hidalgo County; and
99 WHEREAS, On September 16, 1810, Father Hidalgo led several
1010 hundred people in taking the prison in Dolores, Mexico, thus
1111 launching the events that culminated in Mexican independence in
1212 1821; the passionate speech the priest delivered on that day, the
1313 Grito de Dolores, declaring "death to bad government," has since
1414 become known as the "cry for Mexican independence"; and
1515 WHEREAS, The year 2010 also marks the 158th anniversary of
1616 the creation of Hidalgo County and the convening, on September 2,
1717 1852, of its first county court; and
1818 WHEREAS, The 200th anniversary of the beginning of the
1919 Mexican War for Independence represents a fitting opportunity to
2020 celebrate the heroism and patriotism of Father Hidalgo, as well as
2121 the inextricable links between the histories of Mexico and Texas;
2222 now, therefore, be it
2323 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
2424 Legislature hereby recognize the bicentennial in 2010 of the Grito
2525 de Dolores and celebrate the continuing inspiration of Father
2626 Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla.
