H.R. No. 2723 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, Benito F. Perez and Matthew J. Rothblatt of El Paso have won considerable acclaim for their new comic book, Spiralmind: Rabbi's Lament; and WHEREAS, Longtime friends Matt Rothblatt and Ben Perez are graduates of El Paso high schools and The University of Texas at El Paso; they are employed as test engineers for the Department of Defense, working on directed-energy weapons technology at the White Sands Missile Range; and WHEREAS, In 2003, Mr. Perez told Mr. Rothblatt of an idea he had for a superhero comic book based on the mathematical concept of the golden ratio and on Christian and Jewish mythology, and together they formed their own comic book company, Phi3 Comics, and put together an eight-page treatment, with art by Joaquin Silva, another White Sands engineer; and WHEREAS, The result is Spiralmind: Rabbi's Lament, a 28-page comic book with professional artwork, in which engineer-by-day Ben Landry becomes the tech superhero Spiralmind in order to combat the evil Nephilim, fallen angels who are besieging the mythical town of Nineveh; the comic features a great deal of action and such interesting characters as a rabbi exorcist and demon werewolves; and WHEREAS, Spiralmind has garnered high praise from comic fans, blogs, and websites, and its creators have also issued a version in Spanish, Lamento del Rabino; these two talented gentlemen are already at work on a second issue, as well as a 164-page graphic novel showing how engineer Landry became the hero Spiralmind; and WHEREAS, Texas is world-renowned for the vitality and diversity of its contributions to popular culture, and Matt Rothblatt's and Ben Perez's bold new creation is an exciting addition to this proud heritage; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby congratulate Ben Perez and Matt Rothblatt on the success of Spiralmind: Rabbi's Lament and extend to them sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Rothblatt and Mr. Perez as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
