5	5	WHEREAS, Benito F. Perez and Matthew J. Rothblatt of El Paso
6	6	have won considerable acclaim for their new comic book, Spiralmind:
7	7	Rabbi's Lament; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Longtime friends Matt Rothblatt and Ben Perez are
9	9	graduates of El Paso high schools and The University of Texas at El
10	10	Paso; they are employed as test engineers for the Department of
11	11	Defense, working on directed-energy weapons technology at the White
12	12	Sands Missile Range; and
13	13	WHEREAS, In 2003, Mr. Perez told Mr. Rothblatt of an idea he
14	14	had for a superhero comic book based on the mathematical concept of
15	15	the golden ratio and on Christian and Jewish mythology, and
16	16	together they formed their own comic book company, Phi3 Comics, and
17	17	put together an eight-page treatment, with art by Joaquin Silva,
18	18	another White Sands engineer; and
19	19	WHEREAS, The result is Spiralmind: Rabbi's Lament, a 28-page
20	20	comic book with professional artwork, in which engineer-by-day Ben
21	21	Landry becomes the tech superhero Spiralmind in order to combat the
22	22	evil Nephilim, fallen angels who are besieging the mythical town of
23	23	Nineveh; the comic features a great deal of action and such
24	24	interesting characters as a rabbi exorcist and demon werewolves;
25	25	and
26	26	WHEREAS, Spiralmind has garnered high praise from comic fans,
27	27	blogs, and websites, and its creators have also issued a version in
28	28	Spanish, Lamento del Rabino; these two talented gentlemen are
29	29	already at work on a second issue, as well as a 164-page graphic
30	30	novel showing how engineer Landry became the hero Spiralmind; and
31	31	WHEREAS, Texas is world-renowned for the vitality and
32	32	diversity of its contributions to popular culture, and Matt
33	33	Rothblatt's and Ben Perez's bold new creation is an exciting
34	34	addition to this proud heritage; now, therefore, be it
35	35	RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
36	36	Legislature hereby congratulate Ben Perez and Matt Rothblatt on the
37	37	success of Spiralmind: Rabbi's Lament and extend to them sincere
38	38	best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
39	39	RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
40	40	prepared for Mr. Rothblatt and Mr. Perez as an expression of high
41	41	regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
