44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Friends and family were greatly saddened by the loss
66 of Hobbs Williams of Hawkins, who passed away on April 22, 2009, at
77 the age of 85; and
88 WHEREAS, Born on September 2, 1923, in Sulphur Springs, Hobbs
99 Williams was the son of Byron and Lorena Williams; he attended The
1010 University of Texas on a baseball scholarship and had the
1111 opportunity to play in the inaugural College World Series, where he
1212 helped his team by hitting a grand-slam home run; his college
1313 studies were interrupted by service as a bombardier in the U.S. Army
1414 Air Forces during World War II, but he returned to UT to earn a
1515 bachelor's degree in 1948 and a master's degree in education the
1616 following year; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Williams married the former Doris Carolyn Dietze
1818 in 1947, and the couple later moved to Kerens; in 1956, they both
1919 accepted teaching positions in the Grand Prairie Independent School
2020 District; Mr. Williams went on to spend 30 years with the district,
2121 retiring as its superintendent in 1986; his exceptional career was
2222 recognized by Grand Prairie ISD in 2008, when Hobbs Williams
2323 Elementary was named in his honor; and
2424 WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan moved to Hawkins with his wife
2525 shortly after his retirement, and he became an active member of
2626 First United Methodist Church, the Hawkins Chamber of Commerce, the
2727 Veterans Memorial Association, and the Lake Hawkins Homeowners
2828 Association; and
2929 WHEREAS, Hobbs Williams was a man of great skill and
3030 dedication, and his legacy of service to his country, to his family,
3131 and to students in the Grand Prairie community will long resonate
3232 with those who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be
3333 it
3434 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
3535 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Hobbs Williams and
3636 extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife,
3737 Doris Carolyn Williams; to his children, Byron Leroy Williams and
3838 Linda Crabtree and her husband, Bill; and to his other relatives and
3939 friends; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4141 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
4242 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Hobbs
4343 Williams.
