5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Friends and family were greatly saddened by the loss |

6 | 6 | | of Hobbs Williams of Hawkins, who passed away on April 22, 2009, at |

7 | 7 | | the age of 85; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born on September 2, 1923, in Sulphur Springs, Hobbs |
---|
9 | 9 | | Williams was the son of Byron and Lorena Williams; he attended The |
---|
10 | 10 | | University of Texas on a baseball scholarship and had the |
---|
11 | 11 | | opportunity to play in the inaugural College World Series, where he |
---|
12 | 12 | | helped his team by hitting a grand-slam home run; his college |
---|
13 | 13 | | studies were interrupted by service as a bombardier in the U.S. Army |
---|
14 | 14 | | Air Forces during World War II, but he returned to UT to earn a |
---|
15 | 15 | | bachelor's degree in 1948 and a master's degree in education the |
---|
16 | 16 | | following year; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Williams married the former Doris Carolyn Dietze |
---|
18 | 18 | | in 1947, and the couple later moved to Kerens; in 1956, they both |
---|
19 | 19 | | accepted teaching positions in the Grand Prairie Independent School |
---|
20 | 20 | | District; Mr. Williams went on to spend 30 years with the district, |
---|
21 | 21 | | retiring as its superintendent in 1986; his exceptional career was |
---|
22 | 22 | | recognized by Grand Prairie ISD in 2008, when Hobbs Williams |
---|
23 | 23 | | Elementary was named in his honor; and |
---|
24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, This esteemed Texan moved to Hawkins with his wife |
---|
25 | 25 | | shortly after his retirement, and he became an active member of |
---|
26 | 26 | | First United Methodist Church, the Hawkins Chamber of Commerce, the |
---|
27 | 27 | | Veterans Memorial Association, and the Lake Hawkins Homeowners |
---|
28 | 28 | | Association; and |
---|
29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Hobbs Williams was a man of great skill and |
---|
30 | 30 | | dedication, and his legacy of service to his country, to his family, |
---|
31 | 31 | | and to students in the Grand Prairie community will long resonate |
---|
32 | 32 | | with those who had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be |
---|
33 | 33 | | it |

34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
---|
35 | 35 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Hobbs Williams and |
---|
36 | 36 | | extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, |

37 | 37 | | Doris Carolyn Williams; to his children, Byron Leroy Williams and |

38 | 38 | | Linda Crabtree and her husband, Bill; and to his other relatives and |

39 | 39 | | friends; and, be it further |
