44 R E S O L U T I O N
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Franklin
66 Jones, Jr., of Marshall, who died on December 18, 2008, at the age
77 of 77; and
88 WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was born in Marshall on April 24, 1931, to
99 William Franklin Jones, Sr., and Huldah Harrison Jones; he attended
1010 New Mexico Military Institute and earned his bachelor's degree in
1111 1952 and his law degree in 1954, both from The University of Texas;
1212 and
1313 WHEREAS, Admitted to the Texas Bar in 1953, Mr. Jones
1414 returned to Marshall in 1954 and joined his father at the firm of
1515 Jones & Jones, which was founded by his grandfather in 1891; he
1616 worked there as a civil trial lawyer until the end of his life; and
1717 WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was very active in his profession, serving
1818 as president of his local and regional bar associations; his long
1919 history with the State Bar of Texas included service as director of
2020 the Bar from 1967 to 1970, as vice president from 1970 to 1971, and
2121 as the Bar's 100th president from 1980 to 1981; he served on many of
2222 the organization's committees over the years, including three years
2323 on the Supreme Court Grievance Oversight Committee and 18 years on
2424 the Supreme Court Advisory Committee, and he was a member of the
2525 Administration of Justice Committee and chair of the Group and
2626 Prepaid Legal Services and Disciplinary Review Committees; in
2727 addition, Mr. Jones belonged to the Texas Trial Lawyers
2828 Association, the American Association for Justice, the American
2929 Board of Trial Advocates, and the International Academy of Trial
3030 Lawyers; and
3131 WHEREAS, This committed legal professional was also a trustee
3232 of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism and The
3333 University of Texas Law School Foundation, and he was a Sustaining
3434 Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, a Life Fellow of the
3535 American Bar Foundation, and a Fellow of the American College of
3636 Trial Lawyers; his many contributions were recognized in 2004, when
3737 he received the Outstanding 50-Year Lawyer Award from the Texas Bar
3838 Foundation; moreover, he was named a Texas Super Lawyer for three
3939 consecutive years from 2003 to 2005; and
4040 WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was equally active with the American Bar
4141 Association, serving as a State Bar delegate to the House of
4242 Delegates and as a member of the Governing Council of the Litigation
4343 Section; from 1987 to 1989, he served on the ABA Commission to
4444 Improve the Liability Insurance System; and
4545 WHEREAS, Mr. Jones participated in civic affairs as well and
4646 served as chair of the Courthouse Preservation Council of Harrison
4747 County; he was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and in
4848 2002, he was recognized by the Marshall Chamber of Commerce as
4949 Citizen of the Year; and
5050 WHEREAS, Franklin Jones dedicated himself to the legal
5151 profession and to his community, and he will be remembered with
5252 admiration and affection by all those whose lives he touched; now,
5353 therefore, be it
5454 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas
5555 Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Franklin Jones, Jr.,
5656 and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
5757 son, Franklin Jones III, and his wife, Ronna; to his daughter, Terry
5858 Bolger, and her husband, Mark; to his grandchildren, Bryan Bolger,
5959 and Savannah, Tye, and Hallie Jones; to his two
6060 great-grandchildren; to his sister, Jerene Winocour; to his nephew,
6161 Jonathan Winocour; to his brother-in-law, George Francisco III, and
6262 his wife, Trebie; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it
6363 further
6464 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
6565 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
6666 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Franklin
6767 Jones, Jr.
