5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends are mourning the loss of Franklin |

6 | 6 | | Jones, Jr., of Marshall, who died on December 18, 2008, at the age |

7 | 7 | | of 77; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was born in Marshall on April 24, 1931, to |
---|
9 | 9 | | William Franklin Jones, Sr., and Huldah Harrison Jones; he attended |
---|
10 | 10 | | New Mexico Military Institute and earned his bachelor's degree in |
---|
11 | 11 | | 1952 and his law degree in 1954, both from The University of Texas; |
---|
12 | 12 | | and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Admitted to the Texas Bar in 1953, Mr. Jones |
---|
14 | 14 | | returned to Marshall in 1954 and joined his father at the firm of |
---|
15 | 15 | | Jones & Jones, which was founded by his grandfather in 1891; he |
---|
16 | 16 | | worked there as a civil trial lawyer until the end of his life; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was very active in his profession, serving |
---|
18 | 18 | | as president of his local and regional bar associations; his long |
---|
19 | 19 | | history with the State Bar of Texas included service as director of |
---|
20 | 20 | | the Bar from 1967 to 1970, as vice president from 1970 to 1971, and |
---|
21 | 21 | | as the Bar's 100th president from 1980 to 1981; he served on many of |
---|
22 | 22 | | the organization's committees over the years, including three years |
---|
23 | 23 | | on the Supreme Court Grievance Oversight Committee and 18 years on |
---|
24 | 24 | | the Supreme Court Advisory Committee, and he was a member of the |
---|
25 | 25 | | Administration of Justice Committee and chair of the Group and |
---|
26 | 26 | | Prepaid Legal Services and Disciplinary Review Committees; in |
---|
27 | 27 | | addition, Mr. Jones belonged to the Texas Trial Lawyers |
---|
28 | 28 | | Association, the American Association for Justice, the American |
---|
29 | 29 | | Board of Trial Advocates, and the International Academy of Trial |
---|
30 | 30 | | Lawyers; and |
---|
31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, This committed legal professional was also a trustee |
---|
32 | 32 | | of the Texas Center for Legal Ethics and Professionalism and The |
---|
33 | 33 | | University of Texas Law School Foundation, and he was a Sustaining |
---|
34 | 34 | | Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, a Life Fellow of the |
---|
35 | 35 | | American Bar Foundation, and a Fellow of the American College of |
---|
36 | 36 | | Trial Lawyers; his many contributions were recognized in 2004, when |
---|
37 | 37 | | he received the Outstanding 50-Year Lawyer Award from the Texas Bar |
---|
38 | 38 | | Foundation; moreover, he was named a Texas Super Lawyer for three |
---|
39 | 39 | | consecutive years from 2003 to 2005; and |
---|
40 | 40 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jones was equally active with the American Bar |
---|
41 | 41 | | Association, serving as a State Bar delegate to the House of |
---|
42 | 42 | | Delegates and as a member of the Governing Council of the Litigation |
---|
43 | 43 | | Section; from 1987 to 1989, he served on the ABA Commission to |
---|
44 | 44 | | Improve the Liability Insurance System; and |
---|
45 | 45 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Jones participated in civic affairs as well and |
---|
46 | 46 | | served as chair of the Courthouse Preservation Council of Harrison |
---|
47 | 47 | | County; he was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church, and in |
---|
48 | 48 | | 2002, he was recognized by the Marshall Chamber of Commerce as |
---|
49 | 49 | | Citizen of the Year; and |
---|
50 | 50 | | WHEREAS, Franklin Jones dedicated himself to the legal |
---|
51 | 51 | | profession and to his community, and he will be remembered with |
---|
52 | 52 | | admiration and affection by all those whose lives he touched; now, |
---|
53 | 53 | | therefore, be it |

54 | 54 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

55 | 55 | | Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Franklin Jones, Jr., |
---|
56 | 56 | | and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |

57 | 57 | | son, Franklin Jones III, and his wife, Ronna; to his daughter, Terry |

58 | 58 | | Bolger, and her husband, Mark; to his grandchildren, Bryan Bolger, |

59 | 59 | | and Savannah, Tye, and Hallie Jones; to his two |

60 | 60 | | great-grandchildren; to his sister, Jerene Winocour; to his nephew, |
