No. 2766 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, After nearly three decades covering politics for the Houston Chronicle, Alan Bernstein is taking on a new role as director of public affairs for the Harris County Sheriff's Office at the end of May 2009; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bernstein graduated from Northwestern University in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in journalism; he joined the Chronicle in 1980 and earned a reputation for integrity, thoroughness, objectivity, and attention to detail; his reporting was characterized by strict adherence to the facts and a sharp wit that kept readers engaged; and WHEREAS, In his new position, Mr. Bernstein will be responsible for maintaining the openness and transparency of the sheriff's office, which serves more than four million people; his duties will include supervision of the spokespersons who provide the media and the public with details about incidents involving the office, as well as the dissemination of information about internal and external matters to the office's deputies and civilian employees; and WHEREAS, Readers of the Houston Chronicle will miss Alan Bernstein's insight, analytical ability, and 29 years of institutional knowledge, but his skill and expertise will be of great benefit to the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the public that it serves; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas Legislature hereby recognize Alan Bernstein for his outstanding career at the Houston Chronicle and extend to him best wishes for success in his new role as director of public affairs for the Harris County Sheriff's Office; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for Mr. Bernstein as an expression of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
