| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, After nearly three decades covering politics for the |

| 6 | 6 | | Houston Chronicle, Alan Bernstein is taking on a new role as |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | director of public affairs for the Harris County Sheriff's Office |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | at the end of May 2009; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Bernstein graduated from Northwestern |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | University in 1976 with a bachelor's degree in journalism; he |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | joined the Chronicle in 1980 and earned a reputation for integrity, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | thoroughness, objectivity, and attention to detail; his reporting |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | was characterized by strict adherence to the facts and a sharp wit |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | that kept readers engaged; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, In his new position, Mr. Bernstein will be |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | responsible for maintaining the openness and transparency of the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | sheriff's office, which serves more than four million people; his |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | duties will include supervision of the spokespersons who provide |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | the media and the public with details about incidents involving the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | office, as well as the dissemination of information about internal |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | and external matters to the office's deputies and civilian |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | employees; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Readers of the Houston Chronicle will miss Alan |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Bernstein's insight, analytical ability, and 29 years of |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | institutional knowledge, but his skill and expertise will be of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | great benefit to the Harris County Sheriff's Office and the public |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | that it serves; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature hereby recognize Alan Bernstein for his outstanding |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | career at the Houston Chronicle and extend to him best wishes for |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | success in his new role as director of public affairs for the Harris |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | County Sheriff's Office; and, be it further |
