5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Maria Cristina Chirolla, Consul General of |

6 | 6 | | Colombia, deserves the gratitude of all Texans for her tenacious |

7 | 7 | | efforts to battle the drug cartels in her native Colombia and for |
---|
8 | 8 | | her efforts to strengthen the ties between her country and the Lone |
---|
9 | 9 | | Star State; and |
---|
10 | 10 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Chirolla holds both a law degree and a master's |
---|
11 | 11 | | degree in international relations from the Pontificia Universidad |
---|
12 | 12 | | Javeriana in Bogot; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, This brave crusader against the plague of illicit |
---|
14 | 14 | | drugs formerly worked as the rehabilitation coordinator for the |
---|
15 | 15 | | mayor of Bogot, helping women who had become prostitutes, many of |
---|
16 | 16 | | whom were also addicted to drugs; and |
---|
17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Ms. Chirolla went on to become head of antidrug |
---|
18 | 18 | | operations for the office of the Colombian attorney general, in |
---|
19 | 19 | | which capacity she focused on attacking the money-laundering |
---|
20 | 20 | | activities of the drug lords; despite repeated threats against her |
---|
21 | 21 | | life, Ms. Chirolla oversaw the confiscation of lavish homes and |
---|
22 | 22 | | other property belonging to drug criminals, seizing assets valued |
---|
23 | 23 | | at some 3 billion pesos, in addition to ordering military raids on |
---|
24 | 24 | | drug laboratories; and |
---|
25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Now serving as Colombia's consul general in Houston, |
---|
26 | 26 | | she brings to her new responsibilities a profound knowledge of the |
---|
27 | 27 | | complex issues surrounding the illegal drug trade, a deep passion |
---|
28 | 28 | | for justice, and an uncompromising integrity, and it is indeed a |
---|
29 | 29 | | privilege to pay tribute to her remarkable courage and her lifetime |
---|
30 | 30 | | of public service; now, therefore, be it |
---|
31 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 81st Texas |

32 | 32 | | Legislature hereby commend the Honorable Maria Cristina Chirolla, |
---|
33 | 33 | | Consul General of Colombia, for her bravery and her achievements |
---|
34 | 34 | | and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success in all |
